MARKHAM, William Harold, F/L Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment, No. 24 Training Group, Flight Commander of C Flight, Performance Testing Section Public Record Office Air 2/2489 has recommendation for an Air Force Cross. Not awarded but transcribed for the historical record.

Flight Lieutenant Markham has been employed for a Performance Testing Flight in this Establishment. During this period, he has handled somewhere in the region of 100 types of aircraft and entailing many risks. He has also been able to provide data of a technical nature which has proved most valuable and his long experience as a test pilot has resulted in his being able to impart to and instruct with great success other less senior pilots selected for duty as Test Pilots of this Establishment. He has flown approximately 500 hours during his service in the Royal Air Force, and in the performance of his test duties is most enthusiastic and efficient.

I feel that the time has now come when the award of the Air Force Cross would be only a fitting recognition of the service of this officer which terminates in the near future.

(Signed by Flight Commander C Flight, Performance Testing Section, Martlesham Heath)

Although Flight Lieutenant Markham is a man of rather unusual mentality, there is no doubt as to the soundness and excellence of the work he has done in performance and experimental test flying at A. and A.E.E. for a number of years. Though not spectacular, his flying duties have involved almost every possible kink of experimental flying with new types of aircraft. He is always ready to venture into the unknown and has shown conspicuous keenness and courage, and has set a good example to the more junior test pilots.
