SMITH, Eric Vernon, S/L, DFC (82172, Royal Air Force) - No.109 Squadron - Distinguished Service Order - awarded as per London Gazette dated 29 September 1944. Home in Sydenham, London. Served in the ranks before being commissioned in RAFVR, 1940. Awarded DFC, May 1944. Awarded AFC, 7 September 1945.

Since being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Squadron Leader Smith has completed very many sorties against a wide variety of enemy targets. His keenness and determination have been of the highest standard and his successes are an excellent tribute to the accuracy of his attacks. His achievements have been worthy of high praise
.
Recommendation drafted 21 July, 1944 when he had flown 87 sorties (352 hours), including 23 sorties (148 hours) since previous award. Found in Air 2/9159.

Squadron Leader Smith has completed 87 sorties including three daylight Mosquito sorties in 1942. Since joining the Path Finder Force, this officer’s duties have consisted of precision marking and bombing. He has visited all the targets in the Ruhr Valley on many occasions. His determination to press home the attack and carry out his marking duties regardless of opposition has been proved on his many operations.

Squadron Leader Smith is a most experienced pilot who is always keen to fly on operations against the enemy and he has set an excellent example to the rest of the squadron. On his retirement from operational duties, he is highly recommended for the non-immediate award of the Distinguished Service Order.
