CRESWELL, Edmund Keith, S/L, DSO, DFC (107461, Royal Air Force) - No.35 Squadron - Bar to Distinguished Service Order - awarded as per London Gazette dated 29 September 1944.

This officer has completed a very large number of sorties against a wide range of targets, many of them far into enemy territory. Recently he has participated in numerous attacks on enemy railway sidings. He has spent protracted periods over the target and his example of skill, courage and determination has won great praise.

Recommended 20 July 1944 when he had flown 81 sorties (472 hours), 25 sorties (118 hours) since previous award. Found in Air 2/9159. Transcribed by Huguette Mondor Oates.

This officer has completed an exceptionally large number of operational sorties. Recently he has been leading attacks against important Marshalling Yards in occupied territory as Master Bomber. The success he has consistently achieved can be proved by the excellent photographic results he has obtained.

On numerous occasions, Squadron Leader Creswell has pressed home his attack in unfavourable weather conditions from a very low level in spite of considerable opposition, thereby demonstrating a disregard for his personal safety in order to achieve his objective. His duties as Master Bomber have necessitated his remaining in the target area throughout the attack. S/L Creswell has done this with the greatest devotion to duty on every occasion.

By his continued cheerfulness and his determined attitude to complete his mission at all costs, S/L Creswell has set a fine example to the flight he commands over a period of several months. In recognition of the excellent results this officer has obtained and of the courage and fearlessness he has displayed at all times, I strongly recommend S/L Creswell for an immediate award of a Bar to the Distinguished Service Order.

(Signed by S.P. Daniels, Wing Commander, Commanding, No. 35 Squadron, P.F.F., 1.7.44)

“Recommended as a fine operational pilot who displayed skill and courage of a very high order throughout his long operational career.” (Signed by Group Captain, Commanding, R.A.F. Station, Graveley, 21.7.44)

“Strongly recommended.” (Signed by Donald Bennett, Air Vice Marshal, Air Officer Commanding, Path Finder Force (No. 8 Group, 29.7.44)
