Magister I - L8335 - 15 EFTS - crashed on landing Bumfoot (Burnfoot ?) LG.
Oxford I - V3150 - 54 OTU - broke up in air East Thorpe Hall, near Malton, Yorkshire.
Oxford I - V3210 - RAFC - flew in high ground Consburn Moor, near Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire.
Tiger Moth II - N6662 - 1 EFTS - collided near Hatfield with Tiger Moth N9500.
Tiger Moth II - N9500 - 1 EFTS - collided near Hatfield with Tiger Moth N6662.
Havoc I - AE472 - 1451 Flt - abandoned Warboys, Huntingdonshire.

54OTU ORB has 1380126 Sgt HOWARD as pilot and 1286483 Sgt EDWARDS as passenger in Oxford V3150. "It appears that Sgt. Howard lost control of the aircraft while flying in cloud and failed to recover until almost on the ground when he pulled out so suddenly that the elevators and ailerons were pulled off. The aircraft crashed near Malton, Yorkshire. It was comnpletely wrecked and both occupants killed."

BROWN, age 21, Hatfield (Possible for either N6662 or N9500)
DOBSON, age 22, Hendon
EDWARDS, age 21, Ryedale. Confirmed Oxford V3150
GUIVER, Maurice Leonard, age 20, Wigton, Cumbria. Possible for Magister L8335, there is a Burnfoot at Wigton. Interestingly, the next entry in the register is a Morris L Guiver, also 20 and also registered at Wigton.
HAINSWORTH, age 28, Hatfield (Possible for either N6662 or N9500)
HOWARD, Arthur Charles, age 20, Ryedale. Confirmed Oxford V3150. (Note middle name - on CWGC and in register)
MITCHELL, Xela Cambria, age 20, Wayland, Norfolk. Note surname is given as Mitchell on both register and CWGC.
MOORE, age 18 (CWGC) or 19 (register), Hatfield (Possible for either N6662 or N9500)

LAC (Pilot u/t) William MOORE - KOAS. The most likely register entry is age 19 in Hatfield district.

So thats Brown, Hainsworth and Moore all in Hatfield district. Only found Hainsworth and Moore in Flight however.

Edwards and Howard in Ryedale, both KOAS


With no age to go by, there is a George R PRIESTLEY age 43 in N Kesteven district. BUt there was also a George R PRIESTLEY born in 1921 so it might not be related.

V3210 was a none fatal accident, the pilot walked away. The location in the AB books and on the 1180 is incorrect as there is no Consburn Moor in the area, the nearest alternative is the area above Cowburn Tunnel, which is Colborne.


Here are the ORB entries for some of the other accidents.

No.15 EFTS

September 2nd 1941, “Accident to Magister L8335 at Burnfoot RLG – Pilot, LAC Szymen, C. Aircraft stalled when carrying out forced landing practice approach below prescribed height.”

No.54 OTU

September 2nd 1941, “There was a fatal accident at 0943 hours No.1380126 Sgt A.C. Howard was piloting an Oxford aircraft with No.1286483 Sgt C.A. Edwards as passenger. It appears that Sgt Howard lost control of the aircraft while flying in cloud and failed to recover until almost on the ground when he pulled out so suddenly that the elevators and ailerons were pulled off. I didn't copy the page from the No.55 OTU ORB for V7009, probably because it was close to the airfield and a non fatal accident.

Hurricane I, V7009 of 55 OTU on 2-9-41 piloted by Sgt JF Gibson RCAF R72083, engine failure near Woolsington, no injury to pilot.

Henk, with regard Oxford V3150, this occured less than a mile from where I grew up. The location is actually near Easthorpe, note the spelling. The aircraft came down afew hundred yards behind and below what was Easthorpe Hall which was used by the Army at the time.

The hall burnt down some years ago and the site is now occupied by a small housing estate.

Oddly the crash database at Elvington incorrectly gives the location as being near Great Habton, some 5 miles away.

Other than that my info is the same as already given by others.

F1180 for AE472 has 1 killed 0 Injured.

Pilot was Sgt J A Gunn RNZAF and survived.

CoI annotation has
Importance of passengers wearing their parachute packs attached to the harness should be stressed once more.

So it appears the passenger failed to abandon the aircraft.

Strong suggestion to link crash to
Sgt (Obs) Maurice F. BOYNTON - 1068620;

LAC (Pilot u/t) Austen K. BROWN - 656640 and
Sgt (Pilot) John D. HAINSWORTH - 1379349 - their respective Graves Registration Report Forms confirm their unit as 1 E.F.T.S., but no unit listed on the Form for MOORE.
