Hello all,
I have been working on a book for the last few years that will record the aircraft accidents and Air Force casualties that have occurred in Shropshire from 1917 (when the first incidents occurred) until the present day. It’s simply aimed at being a historical record for the future as I consider it to be an interesting part of our local history and one that will record the names of those that died so that they are not forgotten in the future.
My reason for posting this thread, is that I want to list all the men that were involved in these accidents, so that anyone ‘googling’ for information on a relative, or someone they are simply researching may come across this page and get in touch. I am particularly interested in getting photos of these airmen and women and general background bio’s on them. I would be interested to hear from anyone with even the smallest scraps of info. It all helps! I am particularly interested in hearing from relatives, but hopefully some of the board members will find names that they are interested in. To contact me please email me at tomthorne83ATyahooDOTcoDOTuk replacing the At’s and Dot’s with the obvious.
I shall try and break the names down into WW1, Interwar, WW2 and Post War periods and then under sub sections of those that were killed in crashes or died in Service and those that survived crashes. For those that survived accidents and for whom I have information on units they went on to serve with, or awards they later received, I shall include the information.
The ranks shown are those which were held at the time of their accidents. If commissioned later, I shall try and include their commissioned service number to help searches.
I hope the list is of use and hopefully it will encourage any relatives or researches to contact me.
Many thanks, Tom
For now I will post the First World War and Interwar names:
WW1 1917 and 1918.

Hi Tom F/O William John Boston Wadie (73050), RAFVR was my 1st cousin twice removed. I have recently begun researching my family tree so this is obviously of great interest to me. I was wondering if you had any more details on him/his death. All I have found so far is that he crashed just north of Bomere Heath flying a single engine aircraft (presumably a Hurricane or Spitfire), his wife and where he is buried. Beyond that I know nothing, especially where I might find these details out. With his young age at death although he was married I have a feeling he had no children but perhaps you've already been contacted by someone?
My email address is chailey at hotmail dot co dot uk and I am also on msn under the same address.

Hi Tom,
I've just discovered this interesting and sobering website. My cousin Patrick Boothman was killed on 1 August near Shawbury, and I have the accident report, inquest reports in newspapers etc. I even visited the site of the accident and met somebody who saw it happen.
If you'd like copies of what I have, email me directly off board, give me your address and I'll mail it to you.
What an amazing task you've taken on.

I wonder if you can help me, my grandfather worked at RAF Shawbury during WW2 for the maintinance unit he and a fellow worker were awarded the BEM for saving 2 pilots in an accident at Shawbury during 1944, (not sure of the excact date) all i know it was reported in the Shrewsbury Chronical on November 24th 1944 that my grandfather and Alexander Trew where to recive the BEM.
The reason i ask is my daughter is working on a WW2 school project and would like to do a project on her great grandfather and the only information i have is some a copy of the newspaper report and several letters about the medal award, i have no one else to ask as both my father and uncle have passed away.
If you can help in anyway with any information on the accident and the men involved my daughter would be very grateful.

Awarded the British Empire Medal (Civil Division): —
George Frederick Bull, Motor Transport Driver, Royal Air Force Maintenance Unit.
Alexander Wesley Trew, Fitter, Royal Air Force Maintenance Unit.
When an aircraft was taking off it crashed into a stationary aircraft and a motor tractor. The two aircraft and the tractor burst into flames.
Trew tried to release an injured man who was pinned beneath the wrecked tractor but was unable to do so unaided. He was then joined by Bull ajid together they made a second attempt. This, too, was unsuccessful. Other helpers approached the wreckage but a petrol tank exploded and the heat became so intense that they had to give up the attempt. Trew and Bull, however, stood their" ground and eventually the man was released. A second injured man was seen struggling to get out of the burning cockpit of the stationary aircraft. Trew tried at once to reach him but was forced back by the flames. The man then fell through the burning floor of the cockpit and Trew and Bull, without thought for their own safety, went through the flames and carried him to safety. Both men showed great bravery in going to the rescue of their fellow workers.

Hello Tom,
Given that Drunk and Amrit have already supplied some information on the BEM awards. Could you confirm that the following is the same incident?
The moving of the (P)AFU had greatly reduced the number of aircraft movements at Shawbury but the numbers were still very high compared to today. On July 17th 1944 a Wellington XIII (NF127) belonging to CNS collided with a stationary Mosquito (PZ233) from No.27 MU. The Wellington was about to become airborne when it hit the Mosquito which was being compass swung. Both aircraft were completely burnt out. The crash killed Sgt G. A. Goodfellow and a civilian of No.27 MU, A.U.Bancroft, but the Wellington pilot escaped injury.

Hi Col, indeed we are talking about the same accident. Couple of alterations to Ferguson's publication though; Sgt T T A Goodfellow and Mr A V Bancroft killed. Five other Wellington crew escaped, but three were badly burned. Two other civilian's on the Mosquito also survived, although one was badly burned.
As well as the BEM awards, Mr Fred Humphreys was commended for bravery and his name appears in the LG on the same page as Trew and Bull.
Let me know if you're ready for the next instalment on RAAF pilots!

Hello Tom,
Thanks for the confirmation on the Shawbury incident.
I had noted the details for Goodfellow and Bancroft on the CWGC. For Bancroft, the CWGC states that he was injured at RAF Shawbury, on 12-7-1944. Goodfellow's date of death is recorded as 3-8-1944.
My other problem was; Dave Smith, in his 'Mosquito Crash Log' (p.16), records the incident involving Mosquito PZ233 (of 27 MU), as occurring at Shawbury on 10-7-1944! Dave also identifies the Wellington as, HF127, not NF127, as mentioned by Ferguson.
A lot of inconsistencies on this one, that's why I asked for confirmation.
May I ask what date you have for this incident?
I will be in touch privately, regarding other matters.

Hi Col,
i totally missed the date on your posting! Should be 12th July and according to the ORB it was Wellington NF127. Goodfellow died in RAF Cosford Hospital from 1st and 2nd degree burns a few days later as you have from CWGC. Mr Bancroft died on the same day having also been taken to the burns centre at RAF Cosford Hospital.

Hello Tom,
The 12-7-1944 ties it up, thanks.
NF127, was a Swordfish serial: Delivered 1-1-44; 842 Sqn 5-44; 860 Sqn Flt 'Gadia' ('S3'), ditched 28-6-44.

Hi Tom,
I think that P/O R M Pugh (42883) AFC is my father. S/Ldr Robert M Pugh AFC RAF (Ret’d) survived the war and is now 89.
I believe my father was at 11 Service Flying Training School, Shawbury for a very short period in October 1940 before being posted to 14 SFTS, Carbury, Manitoba, Canada in November 1940. I know my father has all his Log Books and might perhaps have recollection of an accident in this period, although he might not be prepared to admit it!
My parents are with us at Christmas and I will ask him what he remembers. Do you have any particulars of the alleged incident if I need to prompt him? He might be prepared to share any information/memorabilia he might have.
You might be interested to know that that my father’s wartime story along with that of his two brothers was relayed in Dilip Sarkar’s book “Through Peril To The Stars”. W/Cmdr T P Pugh DFC (182 Squadron operating Typhoons) was KIA on 2 August 1943 divebombing a destroyer in Dunkirk harbour and P/O John C Pugh who died in a Spitfire crash in 1940.

On your list of crashes at Shropshire you have named my sisters grandfather (she was adopted by my parents). Family stories say that he crashed whilst he was in the RAF, survived with serious back injuries which plagued him for the rest of his life. We wondered if you had any more details re: his accident.

Dear Thorne83,
I am researching the story of the Garthpool, a four masted square rigged barque that was wrecked off the Cape Verde Islands in November 1929. All the crew survived, including my great grandfather, Christopher Bedford Steel (1907-1943) and also amongst the crew was William Norman Basson (b.1912) who I found amongst your lists posted here, having been searching the internet for possible leads on each crew member. He was listed as Acting F/O, (78539) severely injured, MiD (?), but from what I can understand I think he was in a list of survivors, as I have found he didn't die until 1980; and until now I didn't know about a link to the RAF.
As well as getting a clear picture of the wrecking of the Garthpool, I am also very interested in discovering the stories behind each of the crew, where they came from, what they experienced and what became of them after they parted company.
I would be interested to discover what information you may have regarding W. N. Basson. I have already begun to build a picture of him through searching ancestry (which included a document that lists he had the Royal Aero Club Aviators Certificate, aquired in about 1938) and recently I found a link (an article in the Times about a boat race) which lead to a photo of him, which was very interesting.
I hope to discover much more about him and the rest of the last crew to sail aboard the Garthpool.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Yours sincerely,
Jessica S. Fox

Hi Tom
I found your work "Shropshire's casualties and aircraft crashes", (by the way, beautiful work). I have one question.
In the text I:
"Wing Commander James Winter Carmichael “Hank” More DFC (26161), badly injured. 54, 43 and LAC C H Mort (999645). Seriously injured."
This means that LAC C.H. Mort was injured in an accident crew W/Cdr More - P/O Juleff on July 7, 1941?

Hi Pavel, thanks very much. That is in fact a mistake, so thanks for pointing it out. Mort is totally unconnected with W/Cdr More and has just wormed its way onto the same line!
It was just W/Cdr More and P/O Juleff on board the Beaufighter - 'Hank' More was the local Sector Commander at the time and the flight stated as non-operational. I'm not entirely sure why he was flying a 68 Squadron Beaufighter, but presume it was just to gain experience on the type he was responsible for and to get to know his sector a bit better?

Hi Tom
Thanks. I'm relieved. Accidents mechanics is hard to find.
The incident W / Cdr More DFC, I have a theory.
Each pilot (and non-operation) had to fly low hours. (To get airline surcharges)
W / Cdr More to come into High Ercall mandatory minimum hours to fly and test a new type of aircraft. Unfortunately, the accident occurred.

Hi Tom,
I might be able to offer you some assistance.
For the last five years i've been researching the war dead of Shropshire.
I've researched over 250 Shropshire war memorials, photographed 99% of the war graves in Shropshire.
There are a few names, that i know of, that you may not know about.
Aircraftsmen Cyril Robert Salter (Coalbrookdale) Killed in a flying accident near Rugeley 1938.
Pilot Officer Gilber Vernon Wheatley (Church Stretton) Killed in a flying accident at Martlesham Heath, Suffolk. 1928
Flight Lieutenant Thomas Victor Heyes DFC. Killed in a flying accident at Pulverbatch, Shropshire. 1954
Robert Marcel Loubet (Free French) Buried in Market Drayton. 1941
Flight Lieutenant Henry Moody (Welshampton). Killed in a flying accident 1931. His twin was killed whilst flying in WW1
Flight Lieutenant Robert Charles Jenkins (Shrewsbury) Killed in a flying accident at Farnborough 1922.
I have plenty more names. If you wish, you can email me through my website www.shropshirewarmemorial.org.uk

The above was my uncle, my father's brother, and died about thirty years ago after a series of strokes. I have always known that he was in the RAF but have some belief he was discharged, or taken off active duty.
He never married had no children and as my father is dead my sister and I are his closest living next of kin.
I see his name listed on this thread as a survivor of an "incident" in the second world war, and would be very pleased for any further information about him.

Respecting Post No.24:
PUGH, Robert Michael, F/L (42883, Royal Air Force) - No.3 Flying Instructor School - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation drafted when he had flown 2,188 hours, 1,025 on current duties and 148 in previous six months.
"Flight Lieutenant Pugh is employed as a Flight Commander. In this capacity his work has been outstanding. He has had much experience in the field of flying instruction and has always maintained a high standard in these duties. It would be difficult to find a more enthusiastic instructor and there is no doubt that his work, throughout many difficult years, has been invaluable to the war effort."

Hi Jonny, yes, that's him! His brother told me that traffic control was "not what he wanted", so he transferred to the RAF!
Thanks for the dates, they're most useful - I presume you mean 25th January 1941 though?
Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom,
Have just moved my father to a retirement apartment in Glastonbury to be near my sister and in moving all his flying memorabilia wondered how the book is coming on. He is now 91 and in average health but he is still telling all his tall tales, lies and war stories to anyone who will listen!
Would be interested in an update.
All the best

My father W T Martin (1331938) was a rear gunner injured in a Whitley prang at 81 OTU Whitchurch Heath on 2 Feb 1943. The pilot is given in your injury list - Sgt A C Best (1425181). The aircraft Z6496 lost an engine on approach, crash landed and burnt out. The crew were injured but not killed. Other names of the crew were Sgts Waugh, Wisbey and Hockney. Bit of a long shot but I wondered if your records show more about the incident or the crew. I am also trying to find out if my father ever flew again, or whether injury precluded this. By mid-1943, he had moved out of flying and into other RAF duties (fire fighting instructor). I already have the basic incident report and my father's service record, as releasable. There is a possibility that he was involved in a second incident in April 1943, but I have found nothing so far. Thanks

Hi Tom,
I noticed the name Duncan M McGrath on your list, which seems to fit with someone I'm researching for a friend. I have his service record but some of it is smudged and unclear and I can't see anything that links to Shropshire.
Do you have details of where he was based during the crash, so I can link back to the record?
Many thanks
Julia

Hi
Can I just say that there is amazing amount of work by thorne83 gone into this thread!
I joined when searching for details of Aircraftwoman 2nd Class 470079 Vera Hughes and this is/was the only site that had information at the time :)
I did find more details eventually but I will certainly be looking in from time to time!
Here's a link to our page for Vera Hughes just in case it's of interest to anyone:

Le200,
many thanks for your kind words! Should you be interested, I have the full crash report for the incident (numerous pages long).
JuliaP and dmart7,
I would be very interested to correspond, so perhaps you can email me at tomthorne83ATyahooDOTcoDOTuk replacing the AT and DOT with the appropriate.
Many thanks,
Tom

Hi, I'm trying to find the family of Flt Lt Douglas Stewart who was the pilot of Lancaster PD214, 106 squadron. The plane crashed on 6.10.44. My grandfather was the flight engineer. We have recently found the crash site, which is due to be excavated soon. He was the son of John and Ada Stewart of Shropshire and was married to Vera Elizabeth Stewart. Any help would be much appreciated
many thanks

Julie,
I have the service file of the RCAF member of this crew.
If it helps any, V.E. Stewart's address at the time off loss was 345 Inverleith Street, South Carntyne, Glasgow E2.

Interesting perspective on this incident in the November 1983 copy of Aeroplane Monthly - The incident nor crew not stated but date, location and circumstances match - The recollections of author James Henry Read #39682 say trainee pilot (not named) died shortly after with a broken back - but it was 6 days later - not detailing anything more here though due to the nature of the report
