Forgot to mention an aircraft proposal:

Bombay I - L5852 - 271 Sqn - flew into high ground East Dean, Sussex.

Henk

I think the Bombay is the right one as all four airmen's deaths are registered at Chichester and East Dean is in that administration.

Hi,

East Dean is in East Sussex, just along from Seaford (between Seaford and Eastbourne but nearer Seaford). West Dean is near Chichester. There was a landing ground near the Seven Sisters round that way(East Dean I mean).

All the best,

Ann

Hello Ann

Yes you are correct, the airfield you refer to is, I believe, Friston. However there is another East Dean 6m NE of Chichester.

Hi Dave,

Well you learn something every day - I didn't know that there were two East Deans. Never ever noticed it on a map or whilst over that way. I shall go and have a look now. Yep, Friston was the place that I was thinking of, for the life of me I couldn't remember the name, again, have spent many a time chasing the kids around in Friston Forest - must be going senile early!!!

All the best,

Ann

Could Aircraftman 1st Class Leonard Bradburn, RAF 550047, 24 Sqdn., age 21, 17/06/1940, Tangmere (St. Andrew) Churchyard, UK also have been aboard this Bombay of 271 Squadron?

Henk Welting

You may be correct Bart that this airman was killed in same accident. Had his name on file but "hidden" in between the many names of the missing on SS Lancastria. Perhaps DaveW may confirm the place where his death was registered. (Cirencester).

Henk.

In my previous message: read Chichester for Cirencester.

Bradburn's death also registered at Chichester

Henk,

One of the difficulties of the 17th June 1940 is that there was a second disaster. On the CWGC-page of the Rennes Eastern Communal Cemetery this text can be found: 'The majority of the men who rest here were casualties from a troop train which was bombed by the Germans on 17th June, 1940. There are 252 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-45 war here, of which 81 are unidentified.'

Among those buried there are these RAF members:

Corporal Robert Conkie, RAF 543598, age unknown, 17/06/1940, Rennes Eastern Communal Cemetery, F
Flying Officer Robert C. Hodgson, RAF 31444, 17/06/1940, Rennes Eastern Communal Cemetery, F
Leading Aircraftman Lawrence Traynor, RAF 268892, age 40, 17/06/1940, Rennes Eastern Communal Cemetery, F

Which raises this question: who are the other missing RAF men killed on this train (and not aboard the Lancastria)?

Regards,

Bart

Thanks Bart. These three were in my files as being killed on the said troop train. There were a total of 91 casualties. The death on the mailboat Lancastria can be checked at http://www.ipresent.co.uk/RollHonour.htm

Hello Henk,

Just to be sure: these three men were the only RAF-victims on this train?

Henk Welting
10th February 2008, 10:48
I think so. Rest probably were Army.

Thanks! Do you know by chance which German unit was responsible for the bombing of the Rennes train?

Henk Welting

Sorry Bart, no idea.

F1180 confirms 5 fatalities on the Bombay. Pilot Murphy.

So the original 4 names plus the additional one of Bradburn.

Weirdly There is a Bomber Loss Card for

Acting F/O Roger Colin Hodgson #31444 for 17-06-1940 No Aircraft Type just says '?' and Serial and Sqn ?

Adds Dead and "Probably Buried Rennes"

Only lists his name on it as 'Pilot'

Alex,

EREMINSKY, Leonard- F/O - 39609 - RAF - 151 Sqn
Whyteleafe ( St. Luke ) Churchyard, Surrey, UK.
Hurricane I - P2882 - 151 Sqn.
>> As discussed here, P/O Ereminsky was serving with 56 Sqn: http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?8452-F-O-L-Ereminsky-RAF&p=163728#post163728

MURPHY, Colman, O'Shaughnessy - F/O - 39892 - RAF - 24 Sqn.
Chichester Cemetery, Sussex, UK. ( Henk had COLMAN as Sirname ).
BRADBURN, Leonard - AC1c - 550047 - RAF - 24 Sqn.
HARPER, Wilfred Arnold - Lac - 540221 - RAF - 24 Sqn.
LARGE, Hedley Eric - P/O - 41795 - RAF - 24 Sqn.
WRAGG, Ernest - Lac - 540496 - RAF - 24 Sqn.
These four airmen rest at Tangmere ( St. Andrew ) Churchyard, Surrey,
UK.
These five airmen were crew of Bombay - L5852 - 24 Sqn.
>> The unit of this aircraft seems to be causing problems. Our serial database at:
http://www.rafcommands.com/database/serials/details.php?uniq=L5852
lists it as 271 Sqn
The National Archives at: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C16471373
say 216 Sqn. I think this is unlikely, 216 Sqn was based at Heliopolis at the time. It is possible that some of the crew were attached I suppose.
CWGC meanwhile go for 24 Sqn: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2723033/murphy,-colman-o'shaughnessy/
I don't think 24 Sqn operated Bombays
It is also discussed here: http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/archive/index.php?t-12571.html
Looking at the 271 Sqn ORB for Jun40: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8398494
we see that although there is no mention of the actual loss incident (which was not an operational sortie), L5852, captained by F/O Murphy, appears on 5 June, 7 June, and 16 June. On the 16 June, it flew twice:
0810-1105 Hendon to Nantes (empty)
1410-1700 Nantes to Hendon (10 PAX and freight)
Note that LAC Wragg, also killed on the following day, was one of the crew.
I think therefore that this should be recorded as a 271 Sqn loss.

Regards,
Andy

CLIFFORD, Norman John - Cpl - 753581.

Clifford was one of 11 RAFVR (Met Branch) airmen who boarded HMT Lancastria during the morning of 17 June. He had been married on 3 December, two weeks before embarking for France. It is believed he was serving near Paris when German forces broke through French defences at Sedan on 13 May. He remained in the Paris area until ordered to join the general retreat towards Normandy during the second week of June.

He was the only fatality in his group; his remains were found on the beach at Pointe de Devin on 10 August, and he was identified from his ID disc.
