I mentioned this one on the other forum but thought it best to post it here for future reference. As the Allied methods of hunting U-boats improved, the coastal command squadrons became much more adept at finding and sinking the U-boats, particularly after mid-1943. The book, the second of two volumes, discusses these developments and has plentiful details about encounters between Allied squadrons and individual U-boats. It's a great resource with generous appendices and an extensive index.

The volume work consists of:

Volume One
Hitler's U-Boat War - the Hunters 1939-1942
First pub in UK by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 1997

Volume Two
Hitler's U-Boat War - the Hunted 1942-1945
First pub in UK by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 1999

Cassell & Co pubished a paperback set in 2000

Some measure of the work can be gained from the fact that it runs to a staggering 1718 pages in total in the paperback edition. It is particularly detailed from the U-boat side, less so from the Allied air side (and reliant here in part on the works of Norman Franks, so caution should be exercised here).

"the coastal command squadrons became much more adept at finding and sinking the U-boats, particularly after mid-1943"

This should read 'particularly from May 1943' (the month in which the greatest number of U-Boats - 41 - were sunk.

Thanks Errol, quite correct, he does specify May '43. I went looking into this volume on a whim, looking for more information on the one female casualty on my list, who unfortunately was torpedoed in April, just before the air force found its form. For anyone researching the enemy side of an encounter, the book(s) are very helpful.
