Not yet

Many years ago, when dinousaurs roamed the earth and I had more hair, I was compiling information on awards to RCAF persons decorated for Second World War services (a continuing project). About 2006 I realized that, in the course of said RCAF research, I had incidentally acquired some information on awards to RAF and related personnel (mainly because their citations appeared on the same page of a Kew document as a Canadian citation) and I transcribed them. Since then, with the help of several other persons resident in the UK (I live in Canada) I have acquired many more such RAF and associated citations, which I try to share as widely as possible. But to date I have not acquired, through what I call my "network of spies", the citations for 1 January 1946 MBEs and OBEs. As of this moment I have citations for about 20 MBEs and ten OBEs gazetted that date (from my earlier research).

While I hope to have more complete information in the future, I cannot lean too heavily on my "spies" (who do unpaid work for me whilst researching their own projects). Indeed, were I to acquire the appropriate information tomorrow, I would be pressed to transcribe and share the data, given that I am currently (among other things) processing a very large number of awards (BEM, MBE, OBE, ARRC, RRC) that were gazetted in June 1946.

Feel free to inquire again in a couple of months.

BURR, Robert, F/L, DFC (127536, RAFVR*) - Bomber Command Instructor School, Finningley - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9117, courtesy of Steve Brew, has recommendation for an AFC, intended for September 1945 list and drafted when he had flown 1,042 hours, 450 on instructional duties and 170 in previous six months.

This officer has been a pilot instructing at this unit since December 1944, when the school was first formed. He was previously employed as a conversion instructor at an operational training unit for approximately twelve months. He has proved himself to be a very capable and conscientious instructor and his enthusiasm for both air and ground work is outstanding. His energy and initiative are largely responsible for the very high standard that his pupils have reached on completion of the course.

Resubmitted in Air 2/9144 for New Year 1946 Honours List with the same hours cited and a slightly different text:

This officer has been a pilot instructing at this unit since December 1944, when the school was first formed. Prior to this he was employed as a conversion instructor at an operational training unit for approximately twelve months. He has proved himself to be a very capable and conscientious instructor and his enthusiasm for both air and ground work is outstanding. His additional energy and initiative are largely responsible for the very high standard that his pupils have reached on completion of the course.

D’ALTON, Derrick John, A/S/L, DFC (77206, RAFVR*) - Station Ballah, Middle East Command - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation drafted when he had flown 700 hours, 150 on current duties, 50 in previous six months.

"Squadron Leader Dalton commanded the Gunnery Leaders’ courses at this unit from their commencement in June 1943 until March 1945, during which period he was almost entirely responsible for the formation of “B” Squadron which runs these courses and for the improvements which were constantly introduced into the syllabus, Only his immense drive and expert knowledge of the problems of free gunnery could have given the 250 gunnery leaders who have passed through this school during the period of his command the accurate and up to date knowledge they have gained."

Hugh,

Ref this query, I have now found the answer to my own question. It appears that the recs for Operational Commands Lower Awards (BEM, MBE, OBE) for the NYH Awards 1946 (Victory in Europe) did not make it to PRO/TNA. From the correspondence contained within the file it is clear that the enclosure in question has been lost. Searches were requested at the time, but the RAF could not find it. Non Operational and Ex Operational Commands are presnt however. Although I have found evidence in various period newspapers that the AM Bulletins were issued, there is no trace of these at RAFM Hendon. It also seems that, unlike previous years, these did not always refer to 'home towns' and as such, Newspaper Editors were not able to differentiate who was worthy of a article in the local rag. This of course, leaves a large black hole when trying to research these people.

Cest la Vie!

RAFVR* simply means Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. I added the star as a means of using "find and replace" on my computer if I ever wanted to spell out the full title.

I have (and have been transcribing) lower awards (OBE, MBE, BEM) from Non-Operational Commands for 1 January 1946. They are in Air 2/9130, but of course do not cover commands such as Coastal or Fighter. The transcription has been off-and-on of late (more off, I fear - they are an exceptionally dull lot of awards).

The AFC was for services "not in the face of the enemy". For a DFC, somebody had to be shooting at you.

JENKINS, F/L William Spencer (RAF 45650) - Air Force Cross - No.33 Air Navigation School, Ontario - Awarded 1 January 1944 as per London Gazette of that date as per London Gazette of that date and AFRO 113/44 dated 21 January 1944.

"This officer has been employed on flying instruction for more than two years, during which time he has carried out his duties in an outstanding manner. He is an excellent Flight Commander and by his ability as a pilot and his devotion to duty he has gained the respect of all other personnel in the school. Flight Lieutenant Jenkins has completed 1,240 flying hours by day and night."

JENKINS, William Spencer, F/L, AFC (45650, Royal Air Force) - No.84 Group Support Unit, Second Tactical Air Force - Bar to Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation drafted when he had flown 3,230 hours, 350 on current duties, 120 in previous six months.

"Flight Lieutenant Jenkins has rendered excellent service in the Communications Flight, of which he is the Commanding Officer. Since D Day his flight of Ansons has completed well over 3,000 hours flying to and from the Continent and transported over 1,000 pilots and large quantities of urgent stores required by the Group, all without a single accident. By this officer’s initiative and drive, the steady flow of pilots to and from the Continent has always been well maintained. Whenever reinforcements have been urgently needed during periods of adverse weather, Flight Lieutenant Jenkins has always made it his personal duty to fly them over to the Continent himself. The high standard of morale existing in his flight is a tribute to this officer’s fine leadership."

On the course of transcribing awards, I come upon a few that strike me personally as sufficiently unusual as to possibly interest others. The following example drags the Air Ambulance service briefly to the fore. At this moment I do not know the meaning of "C.A.E.C."

SPEED, Nora Helen, Leading Aircraftwoman (2027236, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) – C.A.E.C., Down Ampney, Transport Command - British Empire Medal – awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Air 2/9130, courtesy of Tom Thorne, has citation.

"This airwoman is an Air Ambulance Nursing Orderly who has performed 95 operational sorties to Western Europe, of which 59 were in aircraft carrying casualties of whose welfare she was in sole charge. She has distinguished herself by her devotion to duty and solicitude for her patients and has frequently voluntarily performed nursing orderly duties in the wards after returning tired from her flying duties. She has shared the risks and discomfort experienced on these flights, particularly during the early days after the assault on Normandy when aircraft were often subjected to shelling and mortaring."

Just in case you didn't find it, the C.A.E.C. at Down Ampney was the 'Casualty Air Evacuation Centre'.

ALDER, Frank William, A/S/L (42581, Royal Air Force) - No.575 Squadron - Commended for Valuable Services in the Air - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. The following is from Public Record Office Air 2/9144. At the time of being recommended he had flown 2,031 hours (1,310 in current non-operational duties, 294 hours in previous six months).

Squadron Leader Alder is a flight commander and a most experienced transport pilot who has flown in India, the Middle East and Europe, on transport duties for over three years. Both as a pilot and as a flight commander he has always set the highest example, and his enthusiasm has contributed largely to the squadron morale. His keenness and ability resulted in him being selected to act as personal pilot to the General Officer Commanding, Eighth Army, from November 1941 to August 1942, during which period he carried passengers of the highest importance.

ALDER, Frank William, A/S/L (42581, Royal Air Force) - No.575 Squadron - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 13 June 1946. Citation in Public Record Office, Air 2/9670, courtesy of Tom Thorne, drafted when he had flown 2,130 hours, 1,.420 on current duties, 210 in previous six months.

This officer who is a flight commander has been employed on transport flying since 1941. He has flown in India, the Middle East and Europe and was personal pilot to the General Officer Commanding, Eighth Army for nearly a year. During this period he carried passengers of the highest importance to all parts of the North African theatre of war operations. Both as a pilot and flight commander, Squadron Leader Alder has always set a fine example which has materially contributed to squadron morale.

ATKINSON, Norman Thomas, F/L (141471, RAFVR*) - No.21 Heavy Glider Conversion Unit - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation drafted when he had flown 1,9082, hours, 802 on current duties, 210 in previous six months.

This officer has been employed on glider training since this unit was opened more than three years ago. He has to his credit some 370 tugging hours, of which 176 have been completed during the last six months. As a Glider Flight Commander, Tug Flight Commander and, during the last six months as Group Commander, he has proved to be a most capable officer and an efficient organiser. In spite of the fact that he has always wished to return to operational work, Flight Lieutenant Atkinson has never allowed his personal desires to interfere with his work. He has infected others with his own enthusiasm. His vast knowledge of glider training, both from the tugging and gliding aspect, has contributed greatly to the Unit completion of commitments on time, especially during the period between the Arnhem and the Rhine airborne operations.

BODDY, Herbert Henry, F/L (144287, RAFVR*) - No.3 Glider Training School - King’s Commendation for Valuable Services in the Air - Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation for an AFC drafted for the New Year 1946 Honours List, at which time he had flown 1,200 hours, 1,000 on current duties, 65 in previous six months.

This officer has given meritorious service as instructor and night flight commander at this school from March 1943 until May 1945. He has also done invaluable work in instructing at the glider schools at Thame and Croughton. His work in connection with the planning and organisation of night flying at Stoke Orchard, his present station, has been particularly invaluable. He has maintained an accident-free record of instruction throughout.

HOWIE, Joseph Lambert, F/L (126861, RAFVR*) - No.3 Glider Training School - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation drafted when he had flown 1,100 hours, 900 on current duties and 65 in previous six months.

From July 1942 until the present time this officer in his capacity as Glider Instructor and Flight Commander, has done invaluable work. He has shown the greatest keenness and has completed over 500 hours gliding instruction both by day and night. Before this, at No.10 Elementary Flying Training School, Flight Lieutenant Howie had 400 hours instructional flying to his credit. During the period October 1944 to May 1945, this officer was responsible for the re-organisation of successive glider flights at Zeals, Culmhead, and Exeter. Much hard work and close supervision, under constantly changing conditions, was involved.

JONES, Sidney William Arthur, Warrant Officer (1386477, RAFVR*) - No.1 Glider Training School, Croughton - King’s Commendation for Valuable Services in the Air - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation drafted when he had flown 955 hours, 755 on current duties (tugging hours), 179 in previous six months (tugging hours).

Warrant Officer Jones has been engaged on glider tugging duties since July 1942. For medical reasons he had to discontinue flying, from February 1943 to April 1944, but since this period has been continuously employed as a tug pilot. Throughout he has unceasingly devoted his whole effort to his job, and his loyalty and great enthusiasm have been an asset to the unit.

PATTEN, Charles Louis James, F/L (122403, RAFVR*) - No.3 Glider Training School - King’s Commendation for Valuable Services in the Air - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. From September 1943 onwards, this officer has given devoted service both as glider instructor and later as glider flight commander. His leadership has been of a high standard and his work throughout has been excellent. Before joining this unit, Squadron Leader Patten helped to pioneer glider instruction at the Thame and Croughton schools. To his credit he has 1,040 instructional hours on all types.

PERRY, Albert Walton Ronald, S/L (40845, Royal Air Force) - No.575 Squadron- Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation drafted when he had flown 2,070 hours, 1,461 on current duties, 257 previous six months.

Squadron Leader Perry has served with this squadron for nine months. He has at all times shown great keenness to undertake the most difficult Transport Support work and has flown in all types of weather with and without fighter protection. During the period before and after the end of the German war this officer commanded the squadron for two months. This he did with marked success, despite the complication of detachments operating from both Brussels and Oslo. Squadron Leader Perry has set a magnificent example to all crews and has personally tested many pilots.

PRATT, Edward Ernest, A/S/L (116486, RAFVR*) - No.21 Heavy Glider Conversion Unit - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. This officer has been employed on glider instruction for three years. As a flight commander, group commander and, for the last seven months as assistant chief instructor, Squadron Leader Pratt has proved himself a most efficient officer and a very capable pilot and instructor. He is an outstanding leader whose organizing ability has contributed greatly to the success of the unit.

Do you by any chance have any more details on my Uncle above. I can't seem to find any other records about his service.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hugh,

Another brief snippet for your records. This one concerns 1512002 LAC Leonard Imeson BEM RAFVR, whose NYH '46 citation is one of those missing from Air 2/9130:

The Harrogate Herald of the 10th of April 1946 carried the following article:

“Mr Leonard Imeson of Bankhead, Knaresboro’, a well known member of Knaresborough Golf Club, has been awarded the B.E.M. (Military Division). He was demobbed last October after serving five years in the R.A.F.V.R. Mr Imeson, who was a Leading Aircraftman, spent four years of his service at Dover where he was with the Air-Sea Rescue Service. The citation of the award states that it was granted for “conspicuous gallantry and persistent courage under enemy shell fire.”
Mr Imeson is the son of Mr and Mrs N. Imeson, of 47 Mornington Crescent, Harrogate, and since leaving active service has rejoined the staff of Grace and Hardy, Montpellier Parade, Harrogate, by whom he was employed for 12 years before the war. Previously he was in the manager’s office at the Royal Baths.”

CLOSE, William Stanley, F/L, DFC (130721, RAFVR*) - No.46 Squadron, Transport Command - King’s Commendation for Valuable Services in the Air - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/9144, courtesy of Steve Brew, has citation drafted when he had flown 1,627 hours, 849 on current duties, 219 in previous six months.

"Flight Lieutenant Close has been squadron navigation officer since the unit was converted to transport duties. All navigators in the squadron had to be trained on transport navigation and this was achieved in the minimum time with the maximum efficiency. Flight Lieutenant Close’s untiring efforts and knowledge of his subject were invaluable. This officer’s record of flying with Transport Command is most praiseworthy."

S/Ldr WS Close DFC KCVSA
As Sgt Observer, William Stanley Close served on Blenheim I ops with 211 Squadron in the Middle East from April 1940, 113 Squadron from January 1941 and later with 70 Squadron on Wellingtons from Dec 1941.
By Aug 1942 with 63 ops in the log he was accounted "tour expired" and posted Home.

After the usual post-tour "rest" (10 OTU in his case) he joined 467 Squadron RAAF in April 1943 on ops to The Big City, Happy Valley and the rest, which he survived.
Awarded the DFC in Aug 1943, by Sep 1943 and now F/O, Close had 84 ops and over 750 flying hours in the Log and was screened again, for a deserved staff stint at 5 Group
He returned to flying duty in Nov, this time with 512 (Transport) Squadron where the tempo was pretty brisk, incl air support for Arnhem in Sep 1944.

Service with 46 Squadron (in the transport role) followed from Feb 1945, resulting in the KCVSA as noted for the 1946 New Year Honours.
Post war, Close went on to serve with the Empire Air Navigation School, Empire Air Armament School and later the RAF Flying College.
Made S/Ldr in 1952, his long and lustrous career as a Navigator ended with Staff posts to 54 Group HQ and 41 Group HQ.

He retired in February 1956, coincidentally the same month that my father brought his young family to Adelaide in South Australia.
As Sgt Observers of 211 Squadron in 1940, the two would have known each other.

William Stanley Close died in 1991. As his Flying Log Book is one of those in the RAF Museum collection I was able to request a copy.
From that and other records I was able to compile a rather fuller biography for him,
which can be seen on my website for the Squadron at http://www.211squadron.org/ws_close.html
and from which I've now drafted this summary, either of which may be of some interest.
