Wapiti Crash 1936

Westland Wapiti K1144 overturned at Tunstall Hill near Sunderland, April 4, 1936. Attempted force landing after engine failure. Crew of two uninjured. Anyone know the name of the pilot on this one?

Hi Pavel,
Thanks for that. However that site is new and I have been running the 607 Squadron site here: http://norav.50megs.com for about 5 or 6 years. I have about 4 or 5 photographs of this crash, from the 607 Squadron Association but no-one seems to know who the pilot was: thats what I am trying to establish.

Robert I know your web I have it in my bookmarks but find the other one recently I want to call your attention.

It is always a problem to find out the name of person who survived a crash than to find a grave of that one who not.

Hi Robert,
I have been searching through my own records as am sure I have the A.M.Form 1180 for K1144-the Tunstall accident.I have alot of my own "archive" documents.I have just e-mailed my good friend in the Air Historical Branch requesting the name of the pilot and I will get straight back to you.

Hi Robert,
I am not able to locate the 1180 but I have located a newspaper article from The Northern Echo.The day of the crash was of course on Saturday 4.4.1936,a few hundred yards west of Tunstall Hill.The aircrew names of No.607 Squadron Wapiti K1144 are as follows,
Pilot-F/Lt W.C.Singer,
Observer-Sgt.Frederick Anderson who came from Sunderland.

Robert,
I am also heading this Thursday to Darlington Library where TNE is held on microfilm.
I have nicknamed this library the gold mine as TNE is a very aircraft orientated newspaper!
I can easily send you a copy of this article and as mentioned,could you possibly help on another matter via Dave Charles.As mentioned before my interest is researching both military and civil aircraft crashes south of the River Tyne,Wearside and County Durham.Also including North Yorkshire,Carlisle and the Lake District.Also pinpointing the crash sites and excavating them with my own group.

This is bound to have been covered in local press, just google for the nearest library as they usually have old newspapers on microfilm.
