If any of the forum members are looking for information regarding a member of the armed forces who were Scottish by birth and who lost their life in the two World Wars, Korean War and various others conflicts, a site worth considering is The Scottish National War Museum at www.snwm.org

The site database records the indvidual's name, service number, date of death, any medal decorations, place of birth, rank and the "theatre of death" in which the serviceman or woman lost their life. While it is not likely that it will give much more information, it is more than worthwhile to have an additional database of information and a record of those who have lost their life while serving in the Forces.

The Scottish National War Museum is in Edinburgh Castle.

This database is very useful where the CWGC have no data on an airman, i.e. age or next of kin.

A case in point being Sgt David Purvis 1309732 who died off the coast of Ireland in 1943. Remembered on Runnymede, his CWGC entry gives little information to link him to anywhere.

Name: PURVIS, DAVID
Initials: D
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Sergeant
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Unit Text: 422 (R.C.A.F.) Sqdn.
Date of Death: 25/05/1943

Memorial: RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL

from the Scottish museum site.

I should mention that this site is for the Scottish National War Memorial, not Museum. This avoids any confusion with the National War Museum of Scotland, also located in Edinburgh Castle which has a large reference library of use for research.
