Hello,

Seeking help in identifying a Hurricane ? loss.

AUS403006 S/L Samuel George PROUDFOOT RAAF, CO of No.11 Sqn. RAF, was killed in an aircraft accident at Hindiganal, India, on 13-9-1943. His aircraft is not identified by Alan Storr, and Proudfoot has no A705 available at the NAA.

Proudfoot's aircraft was possibly a Hurricane in the BDXXX range. Don't hold me to that. There is a suggestion of a No.135 Sqn. involvement.

All help appreciated.

Col.

No answer Col, but the only one I can find for 11 Sqn around that time was Hurricane IV serial LB776 Instructional Airframe 4631M 20-9-1943.

Yes Col, we got'm. Forgot to check "135 Sqn". Found for 13-9-1943 Hurricane IIB serial Z5587. Stalled at high altitude and spun into ground, Hundiganal near Yelahanka.

Henk,

That'll be the one!

I extracted what information was available from Proudfoot's A9300 (pp.18 & 20 of 31). The A.M. Form 1406 was sent to the Air Board, Melbourne, in micrographic form. In most cases it names the aircraft type, and gives a serial, but because of the scribble and poor reproduction, it is virtually impossible to make out the detail.

For your files. Proudfoot was originally buried in Hosur Road Cemetery, Bangalore, India. Grave 6-8-2. on 14-9-1943. His remains were transferred to Madras War Cemetery, Chennai, in 1953.

Thanks.

Col.
