Hi Henk,

Bailey was killed in a flying accident at TDU.

He was flying Vildebeest IV, K6408 from Gosport.

Sucessfully demonstrated dropping a torpedo in the new way. Took off to repeat the demonstration but using the old way, stalled and hit the sea 1 mile north north east of Ryde Pier, Isle of Wight. Both Bailey and his observer were killed.

I have yet to seek an identity for the observer.

Regards
Ross

Hi Henk
There is a death of an Alfred Bailey age 26 registered at Gosport in the 3rd Qtr of 1940. As he is buried there he might have died at home , but there is the RN Hospital Haslar at Gosport as well so it could have been accident or illness. Haslar is a long way from N Coates

Dick

Being a little bit curious as to Williams being killed in an Avro 504N, essentially a WW1 aircraft, a little digging finds the incident has been covered previously by the forum. The following adds a little more to the story.
