    Default R.C.A.F. B-25 crash Vancouver Island

    Hello all , Would anyone have information on the location of R.C.A.F. B-25 HD 345 which crashed May 29 1944 near Mt. Whymper Vancouver Island . Thank you. Eric

    HD345 was from 5 OTU. The co-ordinates, taken from a SAR map years ago, before GPS, were 48.56N/124.11W.
    As with the other Vancouver Island sites you have asked about it is a war grave and visitors should act accordingly.

    Hello Ian , I am aware these sites are war graves . I do hike to and photograph some of them. I do not remove objects or desecrate the sites . Thank you for the information . Eric

    May 29* - The bodies of the five men aboard Mitchell HD345 are buried at the crash scene on a mountainside in the vicinity of Mount Whymper.

    HD345 North American NA, Inglewood, California Mitchell B-25D NA-87

    first date: 8 April 1944 - Taken on strength by Western Air Command as a new aircraft
    Ex USAAF B-25D-35-NA serial number 43-3858, ex RAF Mitchell Mk. II HD345. Officially identified as a B-25D in RCAF records. Taken on strength at No. 5 Operational Training Unit at Boundary Bay, BC. Reported missing on training flight on 29 May 1944. Later found to have flown into side of mountain and exploded.
    last date: 26 July 1944 - Struck off, not found by this date

    Info from the crash card:

    29 May 44
    A/C Capt - P/O FJ Whitlock
    RCAF 5 OTU
    Boundary Bay
    Mitchell 345
    Navigation Exercise
    Fatalities 5
    P/O Whitlock
    P/O DFJ Schell
    Sgt MH Mason
    Sgt CA Johnson
    Sgt BWMcGregor
    Visible from ground - wreckage over an area approximately 1/8 mile long by 100 yards wide at a slope of 45 degrees.
    Remarks: A/C struck side of mountain, exploded and burned in vicinity of Mount Whymper - remains of crew buried near scene of crash.
    Crash Position - originally 49.00N 124.15W scratched out and replaced by 4858.5N 12411.5W
