We seek to identify the type of aircraft identification plates were on a piece of wing. Spit?

Yes definitively Spitfire. The first plate is a "modification" plate, which shows all the modifications made to that particuliar machine. These alterations were usually done in Maintenance Units. From memory there's a list of these modifications in "Spitfire the History". There should be other sources as well.

I'm away from my documentation so I can't tell about which part picture n° 2 is corresponding, but the Spitfire is so well known that you should be receiving answers very quickly.

The parts were built in Southampton (6S) but these may be parts incorporated in a Castle Bromwich built machine, as I've seen the case.

Joss thank you for the reply. The problem is a wing that was recovered by fishermen in the Bay of Saint Brieuc.

Hello Dan,

I am reliably informed that it is a plate from a Spitfire VII, and it should be from the top inner mainplane (indicated by No '35103'). The viewable Construction No 6S-438865 told Vickers-Supermarine ('6S'), and the following numbers is a serial number.

Does this Spitfire mark identification tally with what you were expecting to find ?

Thank you for the reply Ian. The person thought well Spitfire or Hurricane. The problem is that the piece of the wing was recovered at sea by fishermen and we know nothing more.
