    Hello,

The pilot of the Vildebeest that came down in 1934 near Bekok, was John Forde Hobler. I have the full story, to lengthy to transcribe. No precise date quoted, but there is no doubt it is the same incident.

Hobler was also involved in another force-landing, in 1936 (once again, no precise date):

"John Hobler had a second forced-landing in the tree-tops, whilst doing a low-flying run over the airfield to drop a target he had been towing, which was being used for naval practice. A clogged fuel line stalled the engine, he ran out of power, and time as well, he had to make an instant decision for a pan-cake landing, on to the tops of the rubber trees in a plantation, to avoid hitting some local houses in a kampong."

A third Vickers Vildebeest (the one that stated this thread) crashed onto a beach near Kuala Muda Kedah on August 30th 1937. The Pilot was Sgt Hanbury who decided to landed on a mud beach as he was running out of petrol on a formation flight of 5 Vickers Vildebeests. Crew:
Sgt Hanbury, Sgt Chaplain and LAC Pick

    Paul,

l agree about the second incident being 1937, not 1936. Looks like a typo in Cousins book - the info comes from interviews conducted with Hobler by Cousins. John Hobler was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, hence the Queensland connection.

A bit more on Hobler on Malcolm's site:

There is some confusion if 28-Sep-37 Vilderbeest K2929 was 100 Sqn or 36 Sqn? - Can anyone with an 1937 AFL confirm Hobler with 100 Sqn at time - I know he joined 100 Sqn in 1933 and was with CFS in 1937 so 4 years in one Sqn seems a long time - Malcom also has the same

    Thanks

    Paul

    Paul,

Have just downloaded 100Sqn's ORB which includes the period we are looking at from the National Archive digital record site.

The September 1937 entries are handwritten and there is no mention of the accident involving this aeroplane.

To clear the record, Hobler was indeed with 100 Sqn at the time and there is a handwritten entry for October 20th 1937 showing him as embarking on HMT Dunera on posting to HE.

Also, there is no entry in the ORB that mentions fitting of the Three-bladed prop to K2929.

Sorry to bump an 11-year old thread.
    Has this ever been resolved?
    1937 or 1938?
