A bit more info on Harvard FE765 (Meyers):

With No. 1 Service Flying Training School at Camp Borden, Ontario when it crashed at 10:00 on 28 November 1943, near Edenvale, Ontario (3 miles north of the Borden aerodrome). Lost control during unauthorized low level aerobatics, and struck the ground in a near vertical bank. Instructor F/O J.A. Gore, RAAF killed instantly, student LAC R.H. Meyers (an American) died several hours after the accident. Local farmer L. Atkinson was recommended for the George Medal for pulling Meyers from the burning wreckage.

Can't remember my source for the spelling of "Meyers" and welcome any correction needed.

    Threads are getting huge!

The index is up to date for today:
    http://www.skynet.ie/~dan/war/henksthreads.html

And the Flight Service Aviation pages are up 1945 also,

Might be some problems with some of the PDF's but I am trying to load fresh ones.

    Hello Bill,

Whilst it does no harm to mention them again, the facts on this incident are fairly well known.

    S H Goodworth, N. Rosser, A Meehan, R J Moran, A N Needham, Sgt F W Smith, S Biss
All the above are Died on Active service airmen.. AC1 Biss I would be doubtful if he should be associated with the aircraft loss? Where might 24 ASR/MCU be located? And old thread on the forum from Ross said:
No.24 Lowestoft/Gorleston AIR29/443 Now there is no date period there.

I have the 7 OTU ORB and it does not include Biss as being on the aircraft.
Crew listed as F/O Waite, Sgt Bennett, F/O Knight., F/S Marshall, F/S Woods, Sgt Stout.

Woods and Marshall were both RAAF

RAF Aqir was in what is now Israel, 76 OTU was based there at the time.

Reginald J Moran is registered in the Wenlock district, surname spelled with two Rs in the index. Search by first names only when names don't show up.

    hello,

Re: BENNETT, KNIGHT, STOUT & WAITE.

    28-11-1943
    No.7(C) OTU
    Wellington IC DV664

Took off on a non-operational daytime bombing practice, and crashed at 1220, 100 yards NE of the Strand, Portballintrae, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. All the crew lost their lives.

An eye-witness reported that the aircraft bombed the target on a low-level bombing drop, and then turned to starboard at a height of approximately 200 feet. On completing the turn the aircraft dived directly into the sea after it had had straightened up. The accident occurred during daylight with strong winds and heavy seas. Had the accident been due to stalling in the turn, it was thought the aircraft would have gone in on one wing first. There was insufficient evidence as to the cause of the crash, but it was considered probable that the pilot stalled the aircraft.

    133073 F/O (1st Pilot) Phil WAITE RAFVR +
1323266 Sgt (2nd Pilot) Geoffrey Albert BENNETT RAFVR +
132409 F/O (Nav.) John Burton KNIGHT RAFVR +
    AUS414859 F/Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Leslie WOODS RAAF +
    AUS409167 F/Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) James Wilfred MARSHALL RAAF +
1321728 Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Cyril Albert STOUT RAFVR +

The bodies of Woods RAAF and Stout were washed ashore.

Woods RAAF, is buried in Drumachose (Christ Church) Church of Ireland Churchyard, Limavady, NI., and Stout in Chingford Mount Cemetery, Essex, UK. The others are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

    Per: Alan Storr (mostly).

For Smith, looking at his parents, Thomas and Ethel and the births in 1921-1923 in berbyshire where he is buried. There was one Francis W Smith born in Mansfield district which includes Blackwell where he is buried. Mother maiden name Pope. A Thomas Smith married an Ethel Pope in 1912 in Mansfield district,

There is a death of a Francis Smith aged 21, no middle initial, in the Bridgend District in the last quarter of 1943.
He is listed on the same page I beleive as Kathleen J Baxter WAAF who dide on Nov 20, 1943. I woudl doubt it related since he does have a Trade of F/Eng on hsi CWGC entry. Everyone else opn that page is older, lets say elderly.

So, despite the F/Eng trade, he does appear to be listed as a Died on Active Service. Casualty Com 349, Feb 1944

    Hello,

575839 Sgt F W SMITH was an "Old Haltonian". The following site states, that Smith, a member of No.25 EFTS, Hucknall, died of natural causes.

Click on "Tribute". then "Roll of Honour" - look under "S".
