OLIVER, Lewis Walter, F/O - No.2 (Army Cooperation) Squadron, Manston, killed 21 January 1935 near Old Sarum “in a Rota aircraft of the School of Army Cooperation.” This was K4234. Subsequently the Air Ministry issued the following statement: “On the 21st January 1935, near Old Sarum Aerodrome, a Royal Air Force Autogiro (Rota Type C.30A) was involved in an accident which resulted in the wrecking of the aircraft and the death of the pilot. The aeroplane entered a cloud when flying straight and level at a height of about 1,500 to 2,000 feet and emerged about half a minute later in a steep dive in which it remained until it struck the ground. The accident occurred in the course of Service training and while the pilot had been a qualified Royal Air Force pilot for more than two years, was carrying out his fourth solo flight in this new type of aircraft.

As a result of his investigations the Inspector of Accidents has come to the conclusion that no structural failure of the aircraft or defect in its control mechanism occurred during the flight. He considers that the cause of the accident cannot be definitely determined but that the evidence suggests, as the most likely cause, that in the course of flying training under Service conditions, made difficult by low-lying cloud, the aircraft in diving had been allowed to reach a speed at which, owing to longitudinal instability, it had become uncontrollable.”

BEATTY, Henry Longfield, F/L - Killed 15 February 1935 at San Filippo, Sicily in the crash of a Short Singapore III (K3595), on charge of No.210 Squadron, being delivered to No.205 Squadron, crashed into mountainside near Messina in bad weather. This was one of four aircraft which had left Pembroke Dock on 15 January 1935 en route to Singapore.

FAULDS, Robert, F/L, AAF - Killed 20 February 1935 while flight testing Gull G-ACIR which crashed at Heston following engine failure at 600 feet; spun into ground while attempting to regain airfield.

ATKINSON, Henry John, LAC (563714) - missing 5 March 1935 following accident to Osprey K3632, RAF Training Base Gosport; F/O N. Radcliffe-Williams pilot. Dinghy stowage cover came off and lodged on tail unit. Both men baled out; Atkinson’s parachute failed to deploy.

RADCLIFFE-WILLIAMS, Nigel, F/O and Sub-Lieutenant, RN) - killed 5 March 1935 off St.Catharines Point, in Osprey aircraft K3632 of RAF Training Base Gosport. Dinghy stowage cover came off and lodged on tail unit. Baled out but strangled by his parachute. LAC H.J. Atkinson missing, believed downed.

BERRY, Arthur Henry, F/O, DSM, retired - Died 12 March 1935

SPOONER, Hugh, P/O, RAFO - Killed 15 March 1935. The following from Flight, 21 March 1935. “It is with the greatest regret that Flight has to record the death last Friday of Captain Tony Spooner as the result of an accident ten miles west of El Arish, to a Misr-Airwork ‘Dragon’ which he was piloting. It is understood that the accident occurred in a very thick dust storm. One engine stopped, and with the other failing, a landing was attempted on the dunes near the coast.

Captain Spooner was chief pilot to Misr-Airwork and was highly experienced in the operation of the air lines started by that company in Egypt.

In 1929, with the late Captain Sparkes, he was instructor to the Montreal Flying Club, a position which he gave up three years ago to go to Egypt. He was undoubtedly very largely responsible for the success of the air lines in that country, and his likeable personality won for him the endearment of all those people, both Egyptian and other nationalities, who were connected with flying in that country.

To Mrs. Spooner, his wife, we offer our deepest sympathy. Incidentally, it is her wish that instead of Glenda Graham, the name by which she is so well known in Fleet Street, she shall in future only be referred to as Mrs. Tony Spooner.

The accident occurred en route to Palestine. Two Swiss passengers, Col. Frey and Mr.Scamidheni, both of Basle and connected with the cement industry in Egypt, were also killed. Col. Cuthbertson, a retired Territorial officer and Mr. David Henderson, who is on the staff of the Iraq Petroleum Company, were injured.”

KIRKLEY, Colin, A/P/O -Killed near Scopwick, Linconshire, 18 March 1935 in Tutor aircraft K3318 of No.2 Flying Training School, Digby, Lincolnshire, with F/O G.E.B. Nixon. Aircraft broke up in the air during aerobatics. Aeroplane of 27 March 1935 reported from inquest held at Digby, 19 March 1935, “Flight Lieutenant John Roberts said that one of the automatic slats from a wing of the aeroplane was found in a wood half a mile from the scene of the accident. He had never heard of a slat coming off in that way before.”

NIXON, George Edward Bullen, F/O - Killed near Scopwick, Linconshire, 18 March 1935 in Tutor K3318 of No.2 Flying Training School, Digby, Lincolnshire. With A/P/O C. Kirkley. Aircraft broke up in the air during aerobatics.

DORAN, Archibald Mouritz, F/O - Killed 21 March 1935 at Air Armament School, Eastchurch; fell out of Wapiti aircraft K2265 in which he was passenger. Aeroplane of 27 March 1935 reported , “An inquest was held at Eastchurch on March 22 on the body of Flying Officer A.M. Doran. Flying Offucer E.C. Ingham, who was the pilot of the machine, said it was the pilot’s duty to ascertain that the passenger had the safety wire attached before taking off. He asked Doran whether he was ready to take off, and Doran replied that he was. During a gliding turn he heard a thump. He looked into the cockpit and could not see Doran but saw two pieces of cowling falling. On landing he found the bombing platform open. His theory was that Doran had leaned back against the gun. His feet might have slid forward with his weight behind them and pushed the platform forward. He would then have stepped back and fallen out.” Doran had been detached from No.820 (Fleet Spotter Reconnaissance) Squadron. HMS Courageous, for an armament course at Eastchurch.

SPROT, Samuel Edward, P/O, AAF - Killed 23 April 1935 - No.607 Squadron. He was flying in DH 60G Moth, G-ABRD, on a civilian flight from Cramlington, Northumberland to Knitsly, County Durham. Local reports and 607 ORB give date of his death as evening of April 24, 1935. Sammy's brother Andrew was pilot of the aircraft when it crashed into the grounds of their father’s estate at Woodlands Hall, Knitsly. Sammy was killed in the accident and was buried in the family vault at Dunino Church, St Andrews, Fife: he was 22 years old. The family were formerly named Sadler but, for business reasons the name was changed to Sprot two years before Sammy was killed.

MOORE, Martin Cedric, F/O - No.216 Squadron - killed 28 April 1935. On a flight from Cairo to Capetown, Victoria J8232 of No.216 Squadron alighted at Tororo, Uganda and overran the field, coming to a stop in long grass. On getting out he walked into one of the revolving propellers and died of his injuries.

MOULD, Gordon Edward, Sergeant Pilot Mould - 23 August 1935 in Nimrod aircraft K2825 of No.801 (Fleet Fighter) Squadron. Machine dived into sea during practice bombing, Christchurch Bay. Reported in Aeroplane, 18 September 1935. Lieutenant-Commander Guy Willoughby, RN (F/L, RAF) reported he was leading three aircraft of which Mould’s was the third. They dived from about 12,000 feet at 270 mph and released their bombs at about 1,500 feet over a fast armoured motor launch which acted as target. The witness said that having completed his dive he turned to see where bomb had fallen and saw Mould’s machine go straight into water. Verdict returned of “Dead by misadventure”, the jury adding, “This promising young man died while performing a hazardous but necessary duty.”

STEPHENSON John Rupert, P/O - Killed 1 October 1935 - Station Gosport. Killed at Stokes Bay in aircraft accident. Inquest held at Gosport, 4 October 1935. Details from Aeroplane, 9 October 1935. “P/O John Whillier said that he, F/L Wisher and the deceased officer were flying in formation at about 1,400 feet. The witness said that he came up on the right in an attempt to get into position and was watching the formation leader. He suddenly saw Stephenson’s machine dangerously near his top plane and to avoid it took a diving turn to the right. The top wing of his machine touched the airscrew of Stephenson’s machine and as he righted himself he saw then other machine gliding down. He added that he was watching the leader, whereas a more experienced pilot would have watched both machines. F/L Wisher said that the accident was probably due to Whillier approaching the formation from the wrong angle. There was nothing reckless or careless in what he had done. The coroner said that there was nothing to justify expression of blame and a verdict of Accidental Death was recorded.”

FISHER, Neville, P/O - killed 17 October 1935 - of Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, Bulldog K1693. Practicing aerobatics at Braucewell, lost control, baled out too low for parachute to deploy. “Evidence was taken that Mr. Fisher was a competent pilot. He learned to fly with the Cambridge University Air Squadron and had been at Cranwell for a few weeks. A bricklayer who saw the accident said that he first saw the machine at about 100 feet in a spin. He did not see the pilot jump. The body was found about 70 feet from the machine. A verdict of accidental death was returned.” (Aeroplane, 23 October 1935).

ROSS, Alexander, F/O - Killed 9 November 1935 in Hart K4371, No.40 Squadron...“lost their lives as a result of a collision in the air between two aeroplanes of No.40 (Bomber) Squadron at Abingdon on Nov. 9. [1935). LAC Waugh was the passenger of the machine piloted by Flg Off Ross and Sergeant Park was the pilot and sole occupant of the second machine. An inquest was held at Abingdon on Nov.11 on the bodies of the crews of the two machines. F/L A.A. Jones said that they were flying back from Cardington with three news machines. On the return journey the three new machines, one piloted by Ross, were flying in front, and he gave the signal to break formation. He saw Ross climb to the right, but nothing else. Squadron Leader A.P. Ledger, who was standing on the aerodrome, said that he though Ross’s view might have been obscured by a wing in turning, so that he did not see Park’s machine. They had parachutes but were probably stunned by the force of the impact.” Aeroplane, 20 November 1935. Report in Flight stated that Sergeant Park was from Vancouver. Aircraft were on ferry flight.

Flight greatly regrets to record the death, in the earthquake which took place at Quetta, India, last Friday, of a Royal
Air Force Officer and a number of airmen. The squadrons at Quetta Aerodrome, where the casualties occurred, are Nos. 5
and 31 (Army Co-operation), equipped with "Wapitis." His Majesty the King has sent a message to the Secretary of State for Air expressing his deep sympathy. Lord Londonderry
and Sir Edward Ellington (Chief of Air Staff) have sent personal messages of sympathy to the A.O.C., Royal Air
Force. India.

SMITH, Keith Noel - should be Kenneth Noel Smith? Died 14th April at Karachi, India. Source is the National Probate Calendar.

KNIGHT, Ronald William Henry - the Gloucester Echo of April 17th 1935 reports that he died in a plane crash in West Africa, along with a Captain Arnault, a French official. Knight was an gent of the United African Company, and was flying to Agades. He was a member of Cambridge Air Squadron, and held a commission in the Air Force Reserve.
His wife also died whilst searching for his plane, some six weeks later, along with a Mr Payton, her companion. Her rather gruesome death is reported in the Taunton Courier of June 5th 1935, amongst others. Knight had been recommended for the Jubilee Medal.

SLOAN, James Pattison - the Lincolnshire Echo reports that he drowned age 23 whilst bathing in a pool at Culverthorpe Hall, the residence of Brigadier-General Adlercron.

LUKE, Thomas Carlyon - died at the R.A.F. Hospital Halton, aged 43. Source is the National Probate Calendar. His death was announced in the Times of July 2nd 1935. He was credited with six aerial victories in the First World War with 66 and 209 Squadrons.

EVERETT, Ernest Norman Victor - the Dundee Evening Telegraph of August 27th 1935 reports that "Two Britons and a wealthy Indian landowner were killed near Nellore, Madras Presidency, when their plane crashed after a wing had fallen off. The British dead are Mr. E. N. Everett (29), pilot instructor to the Madras Flying Club, and Mr. H. J. Carter (28), of the Imperial Tobacco Company, Madras. The Indian is Zemindar Copal Puram, a cousin of the Chief Minister of the Madras Government.
Mr. Everett, who had seen service with the R.A.F. on the Indian Frontier, was well known as a stunt pilot. He held several cross-country flying records."

CROW, Cedrex Rex - died at Bleasdale Moor, near Garstang - source is the National Probate Calendar.
The Lancashire Post of October 28th reports that he died in "Railway Air Service de Havilland Dragon liner [which crashed] on Fairsnape Fell, Bleasdale." The crash claimed two lives: "Capt. Cedric [sic] Rex Crow (25), Quinniver, Henfield, Sussex, who was piloting the machine, and the only passenger, Ronald Swailes (22), bank clerk, Station Road, Port Erin, Isle of Man."

WOODBYRNE, Cecil William - the Western Daily press reports that he died "as the result of an accident near Nefisha, Egypt, to D.H.9.A. of No. 4 Flying training School, Abu Sueir on the 23rd Inst. Pilot Officer Cecil William Woodbyrne, the pilot of the aircraft, and No. 325865 A.C.1 Arthur Thomas Croom were seriously injured. Pilot Officer Woodbyrne died later in the day."
