Frank Needham and Eric Kershaw, HN311

i am currently researching the accident that these two pilots were involved in as they are local to me, the accident sight being a half mile down my lane. From the weather records of the day they were caught out by a deterioration in the weather. Fog settled across RAF Church Lawford near Rugby with visibility down to 1800 feet. The aircraft was part of the Beam Approach Flight and it appears that they pushed the limits and stuck Elm trees on the center line some 2 miles or so before the threshold of the runway. Another two lives of over 8,000 lost to training during WWII.

I still need to visit Kew for the Squardron records however if anyone has some background details on beam approach training, RAF Church Lawford or the two pilots I would be most grateful if they would let me know.

    Hello everyone

With reference to Donald Harpin, D.F.C., I came across this report in the Newcastle Journal of December 30th 1944:

Flying Officer Ronald Harpin, of Gateshead, has taken part in many missions supplying resistance workers in enemy-occupied territory in the Balkans, and yesterday it was announced he has been awarded the D.F.C. On 12 flights he has had to land on improvised landing strips in mountainous country, often in bad weather.

The LG entry of December 29th doesn't supply a unit for Harpin's D.F.C., so can anyone help?

    Regards

    Simon
