Just wanted to share a trial site feature that is now available for all RAFCommands Forum members who have made more than 10 posts in the past.
Most of you are aware of Wikipedia - the online encyclopedia. Wikipedia harnesses the power of multiple contributors who can edit a single page and collaboratively work on a single topic . The software behind it is called "mediawiki" . I have now installed a copy of the media wiki on our site at http://www.rafcommands.com/wiki
How/Where can this wiki software help us?
Its quite helpful when you have a 'Data Project' as you see in our Data projects forum. Example.. RAF Deaths for 1931. (or any year). When Hugh Halliday makes a post giving a list, there is subsequently a dozen posts adding additional information in that thread, but all the information is never consolidated back into the original post. it is too much to expect one poster (the thread starter) to keep consolidating the info. The forum software does not allow edits after an initial period (For good reason this is kept enabled). Ideally it would be great to have the original post in such threads updated with the subsequent info.
To this effect the wiki might help. Those interested can create a page, and others can chip-in , edit the same page and add their side of work.
For example.. I have created a page for the ORBs in my collection. ORBs that I am willing to do look ups and share pages from. http://www.rafcommands.com/wiki/index.php/Squadron_ORBs if others have ORBs they are willing to look up, they can edit the page and add the information directly in there.. you can create a new page for example (i might put all the iAF units in a seperate page etc).
Now the question - how can I edit the page?
If you are a member of RAFCommands forum (With atleast 10 posts), then your username/email is already loaded into the wiki software. Use this link to retrieve your temporary password http://www.rafcommands.com/wiki/index.php/Special:PasswordReset and then login , and you will see the edit tab on top of all pages.
Now the drawbacks.
While most of the text can be simple text, for formatting in bold or italics or fancy stuff with text, there is a specific wiki markup language that one needs to get familiar with - to display information in tables or with special formatting. with so much going on in our lives, who has the time to learn a new 'language'?
Anyways - this is a trial balloon with this software, see if it is a useful feature to have (or not!)
