    Default Tempest II PR646 Accident - 5 Squadron - June 1947

1947-06-11 Tempest II Sqn Ldr Pandit 5 Sqdn PR646 ac uc collapse on ldg - caught fire and burn

I originally got information about this accident from one of Colin Cumming's book.

The name of the pilot is given as "Sqn Ldr Pandit" - which I take it as referring to an Indian pilot A R Pandit (DFC) who later retired as an Air Marshal. The problem is that his logbook doesnt mention it and the ORB of 5 Squadron for June 47 is missing. (though NA shows May and July as available!).

Can I get a confirmation that it was the Indian pilot who was probably sent to 5 Squadron for conversion training? Any additional information / references are welcome.

Shores and Thomas in their book Typhoon and Tempest Story have a note that Pandit was a 10 Squadron (RIAF) pilot converting to Tempests with 5 Sqn (RAF).

The May 47 ORB of 5 Squadron confirms in detail a whole bunch of pilots from No.1 and No.9 Squadrons IAF were sent to No.5 for Conversion on the Tempest. Sqn Ldr Pandit was sent to take over command of No.1 in June and that must be the reason he ended up in that Tempest. Prior to this I thought he was a one-off 'conversion' candidate.

Folks bumping up this thread for a long shot inquiry - does anyone have a F1180 or any other 'official' / contemporary document related to this prang?
