Corporal Warner died of injuries sustained on 18th March at Pocklington Airfield.

“ At 12.59 hours a jeep from Flying Control overturned on the perimeter track at the end of No 14 runway seriously injuring A/Cpl Warner, R. (Met) with the other casualties being Flying Officer J Saynor, Cpl Gleave, AB. (Met) and LAC Collier, AG. (Met). Warner was conveyed to York Military Hospital, Gleave to Northallerton Hospital with the remainder being admitted to Station Sick Quarters”

407572 F/L Hartley Banks DELAND RAAF.

407572 F/L (Pilot) Hartley Banks 'Hooky' DELAND RAAF (of No.87 [PR] Sqn RAAF), in company with 418505 F/O (Nav./W) John Cyril JORDAN RAAF*, F/Os 185868 Joseph MASSEY DFM, RAFVR and 185869 David Sidney MATTHEWS RAFVR (both of No.110 Sqn RAF), spent part of the evening in Johore together with three W.A.A.F.s and some army officers. On the homeward journey their conveyance, an Army station wagon, crashed through the parapet of a small bridge on the south side of Johore Causeway.

F/L Deland received head injuries and was thrown into the brook some ten feet below. He was killed instantly.

F/O Massey, being thrown forward, sustained internal abdomen injuries and died in hospital at 1600 hours on the following day (Please note - 25-3-1946 qv).

The accident took place at 2245 hrs on the 24th March, 1946.

The army wagon belonged to the 2nd Division.

Both men were originally buried in Wing Loon Road Cemetery, they are now concentrated in Singapore (Kranji) Military Cemetery.

151623 LAC David George KEENE RAAF (of No.4 Radio Installation & Maintenance Unit, Kingaroy), was seriously injured in an RAAF vehicle accident at Harlin, Queensland, on 20th March, 1946. He suffered a compound fracture of the left forearm, fractured pelvis and a punctured bladder. LAC Keene died as a result of his injuries in Greenslopes Hospital, Brisbane, on 24th March, 1946. Six other members of the RAAF received various degrees of injuries in the accident, but all survived. They were:

I've an interest in Warner; probably a long shot but I wonder if the ORB contains any other information about the accident. Given the time I suspect the vehicle was transporting the men either to/from ATC at the beginning/end of shift. It's possible Saynor was aircrew, the only J Saynor I can find in the LG is 177018.

Hi Brian,

The only other entries of note are:-
18th March. Court of Inquiry convened.
24th March. The Meteorological Superintendent of HQ 4Group Mr F. Davies, visited the station. (I’m guessing this was concerning the accident)
28th March. Cpl Warner’s funeral took place at Ackworth Moor Top near Pontefract. Flight Lieutenant KL Byles and five other ranks represented the Station. (Fl/Lt Byles was the SFCO).
29th March. Inquest at Law Courts York, verdict Accidental Death.
10th May. 177018 J. Saynor GD/P posted to Dishforth.
