LYE, Robert William - LAC - 3011055 - the Gloucester Citizen of December 3rd 1946 reported the following (edited for brevity):
INNSWORTH DEATH AFTER OPERATION
"I have no evidence of any lack of skill on the part of the surgeon, or during the administration of the anaesthetic, and I think it is one of those unfortunate happenings that sometimes occur."
Mr. J. D Lane, the Cheltnham Divisional Coroner made this comment when recording, on Monday eveing, a verdict of death from misadventure at the inquest on L.A.C. Robert William Lye, who died following an operation at the R.A.F. Station Hospital Innsworth on November 20.
Evidence was given that an operation was performed on Lye for a disease of the middle ear. Everything went smoothly, and at no time did the patient's condition give any cause for anxiety. At the end of the oepration, when bandaging had been begun...Lye suddenly turned pale and his pulse could not be felt. Immediate measures for resuscitation were made, but death took place.
Squadron Leader John S. Lawrence, medical specialist, who made the post-mortem examination said...the cause of death was heart failure following anaesthesia and operation for mastoid, and contributed to by air embolism.
