431361 F/O (Nav."W") David Hugh KING RAAF (ex-No.87[PR]Sqn RAAF), was officially discharged from the RAAF on 11 November, 1945. He died of an unspecified illness in Victoria, on 20 December, 1946.

There were several casualties of war amongst the members of the MVAF. F/O Patrick Beddel of “C” Flight was shot down by Japanese aircraft while flying a Catalina Flying Boat over the Gulf of Siam on 7th December 1941. Australian Sgt. Vernon Trevethan – formerly RAAF then Wearne Airways – and Flt. Sgt. Herbert Cleaverley of “B” Flight were victims of friendly fire and Japanese bombing, on 17th December, having landed in Ipoh from Singapore in their Dragon Rapide, carrying spare parts and ammunition. Sqn. Ldr. Richard "Cyp” Markham of the Malayan Education Department, who learned to fly with the SSVAF but took over RAF 36 Squadron on the 19th December 1941, was killed in action flying a Vildebeest, while attacking Japanese shipping near Endau in January 1942.

I am pretty much done with the majority of the 1941 CWGC Database

There are 13016 airmen/women recorded in CWGC.
I have been able to account for 10247 10715 records (82.32%)
This leaves 2769 2301 1945 still unaccounted for. (21.27%)15.04%

11096 records (85.25%) have circumstances of death.
1920 records (14.75%) do not have details.

1259937 Frank Walter COLE - the Diss Express of January 10th 1941 reported his death "following a series of operations." His death was registered at Hereford.

913950 James Edward WILCOCK - the Liverpool Echo of January 4th 1941 reported the following:

BUCKLEY R.A.F. MAN'S FATE
E. J. [sic] Wilcock, aged 24 [sic], an R.A.F. man, whose home was in Nantmawr Road, Buckley, and who sustained injuries when the motorcycle on which he was a pillion passenger was involved in collision with a motor lorry, near Chester, on Christmas Eve, has died in hospital in Chester.

Albert Ronald BRANT (1307848) - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at Botley Park Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey. His address is given as Sealand Camp, near Chester.

Norman HYDE (642519) - the Wiltshire Times and Trowbridge Advertiser of January 11th 1941 reported that he was fatally injured in the black out by a lorry on the main London Road at Calne whilst waiting for a bus with around 40 other men on the evening of December 27th 1940. He was taken to hospital at 7.00 pm suffering from head injuries, and died on Saturday January 4th 1941.

Gilbert Howard DAVIES (627299) - the Nottingham Evening Post of Janaury 7th 1941 reported a similar incident to the one above. Gilbert Howard Davies was knocked down by a car in the black out whilst walking with another airman along Fosse Road, near Saxondale, at around 11.00 pm . The other airman, William George Evans, was injured and taken to hospital. The Coroner returned a verdict of "accidental death" and remarked that it was the second fatal accident at the same spot.

First Officer Amy V. JOHNSON - is Amy Johnson unaccounted?

Robert Desmond GOLD (1168166) - registered Lewisham.

Captain Herbert John HORSEY - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at The Victoria Hospital, Swindon.

Kenneth WILLIAMSON (1168600) - the Staffordshire Advertiser of 18th January 1941 reported his funeral, and that he "lost his life in an accident while serving with the Royal Air Force."

George William Thomas COLEMAN (955493) - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at Yatebury Camp.

Stanley Cresswell MIMMACK - the Mid Sussex Times of Januaury 14th 1941 reported that he died of pleurisy at Hillingdon County Hospital. It reports that he had been injured in a plane crash in France during WW1, and he had re-joined the R.A.F. in August 1940 as a member of the ground staff.

Harold Withall ASTON (83051) - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at The Military Hospital, Conchan, Douglas, Isle of Man. The Western Gazette of January 24th 1941 reported his funeral, and that he died "after a short illness."

Arthur Jeffrey STEVENS (358255) - the Middlesex Chronicle of January 25th 1941 reported the funeral of Corpl. Arthur Geoffrey Stevens, and reported that he died "due to enemy action."

James John MORRISON (633949) - the Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website records that he died at 4.05 pm at East Fortune Base Hospital due to cellulitis of the neck, from which he had been suffering for 21 days, and streptococcal septicaemia.

John Arthur BAILEY (66296) - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at R.A.F. Hospital Cosford.

John Hope FOSTER (1050317) - the Western Daily Press of January 15th 1941 reported that he was knocked down and killed by a car on the outskirts of Calne on the Saturday evening. Another airman, Douglas Soutrar, was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Thomas James WOOD (1263490) - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at 67 Robert Street, Plumstead, Kent.

Jindrich LESKAUER (82617) - Wellington T2519 KX-Y - BCL 1941, Chorley, page 15

Ronald John HAY (920364) - the Western Mail of January 22nd 1941 reported that he died one month after he was married. His death was due to a seizure.

James HANCOCK (1059866) - the Yorkshire Post of January 21st 1941 reported the following:

Airman Killed in Black-out
“Accidental death” was the verdict returned by the Stamford Coroner (Mr. G. Phillips) on Aircraftman James Hancock (20), of 2, Small Street, West Stanley, Durham, who stepped from a bus into the path of an oncoming lorry during the black-out period. The Coroner said that the lorry driver was in no way to blame.

Harry George WETTON (1161986) - the Statutory Death Register on the Scotland's People website records that he was an "Aircraft Hand Motor Boat Crew", and that he died in Oban Bay off Kerrera Island due to accidental drowning.

John Charles HARRIS (1121391) - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at the R.A.F. Hospital, Morecambe.

Victor RICHARDSON (935945) - the Western Mail of January 25th 1941 reported the following:

ONE KILLED, 4 INJURED
Victor Richardson, aged 31, of Middleton, Leeds, has died at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, from injuries received in a motor-collison in which four other persons were injured. They were John McClurg, 23, Newcastle, Co. Down; Leonard Elston, 28, King's Lynn; James Disney, 35, Sheffield; and Charles Crosby, 26, of Newport.

George Henry DAWSON (850567) - the Birmingham Mail, amongst other newspapers, reported the inquest on January 31st 1941. It reported that he was walking with two other men along Pershore Road South, Birmingham, during the black out when a car knocked all three down. A following bus was also involved and two of the men were fatally injured. The dead men were Henry Hurrell, aged 50, a factory worker and George Henry Dawson. The third man was Hurrell's son in law, and he stated that they were returning from the pub, but denied that they were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. A verdict of accidental death was returned, the Coroner stating that the men were walking with their backs to oncoming traffic and "not carrying out reasonable safety first precautions."

John George MACKAY (76919) - the 26 Sqn ORB Form 541 for Janaury 1941 records that he died in the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford. His death was reported in several local newspapers in Scotland, including the Perthsire Advertsier of January 29th 1941, which reported:

A Scone airman, Pilot Officer John George Mackay, has died at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, after a long illness. He sustained multiple injuries in a mishap which occurred while he was on duty in the middle of June.

Donald Ernest WREN (246108) - the Register of Burials for Charlton Cemetery records that he died at the R.A.F. Hospital, West Kirby, Cheshire.

Basil Le Gay JONES (84584) - the Brimgham Daily Gazette of February 1st 1941 reported the following:

Air Pilot Shot
Flying Officer Basil Le Gay Jones, aged 41, of Newmarket Road, Cambridge, was found shot early yesterday at his home. A revolver was found by his side. He was taken to hospital, but he died shortly afterwards.

d. 1 Feb 1941 (Died in ATA Service) - while performing unauthorised aerobatics at Ringway airport in Mohawk AR664 - engine failure led to a stall and spin into the ground.

Albert Thomas Richard LAING (1359179) - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at The West Kent Hospital, Maidstone.
