    James JONES. B.E.M. Corporal, 628449, Royal Air Force. Died 26th June 1942. At rest in grave 15 plot, P, Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta.

    Credit the following to http://www.burnleygallantry.co.uk/ha...morial/WW2.htm

    628449 Corporal James Jones, BEM. Killed at RAF Luqa, Malta on the 26 June 1942 whilst handling an unexploded canister bomb. Buried in Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta.

    Awarded the BEM for gallantry at Royal Air Force Station, Luqa, Malta, "Corporal Jones who is employed in bomb disposal duties, has displayed high courage and devotion to duty. On 2 May 1942 a large delayed action bomb was dropped close to a Wellington aircraft. On examining the bomb, Corporal Jones found that there were two unmarked fuses that were ticking. This indicated the almost certain presence of an anti-withdrawal device. Fully aware of the grave risk to himself and realising that a valuable aircraft was endangered, Corporal Jones attempted to remove the fuses. He extracted one successfully and this was practically the first of its type to be removed and was of great interest to the experts.. He found it impossible, however, to extract the other as it was so firmly set. Corporal Jones displayed great gallantry and complete disregard for his personal safety."

    Hi Pavel,

    From the Abbreviations at the front of that book (page xvi),

    Da = Diphtheria
    Dm = Dementia (note states that this 'is typically the third stage of pellagra')
    Pe = Pellagra

    Hello All,
    Flight Sergeant Nicolaos HRISTAKOS (657) d. 1942-06-09 (Not in AIR 78. S/n from CWGC. That is not an RAF/VR No - so must be an HAF number?)

    Paul, (et al),
    798690 is in the Block 798500-799549 (highest issued 798857) RAFVR Local Newfoundland issued from 01-Aug-40.
    Now this annotation "Local" occurs several times, for various Blocks (can list of necessary). My understanding was the "Local" Enlistments meant that the enlisting personnel (both male and female) would be uniformed, given basic training, be subject to the Air Force Act (and any other wartime laws/regulations that may have been passed), but not required to serve away from where they lived (contingencies, etc, excepted).
    This would allow personnel living near to major RAF bases to serve in a whole host of ancillary, non-operational, tasks while 'living at home' as it were. Being subject to the Air Force Act meant that in the event of WW2 coming to where they lived, they would not be able to disappear into the undergrowth!
    I have "flown this kite" on a number of occasions. None have elicited a definitive response - or, indeed, any sort of information! There must have been a reason for the use of the word "Local" in a number of Enlistment Blocks?
    What was it?
    TIA
    Peter Davies
