    Default F/Sgt HENDERSON John William 1025678 - P.o.W.

    Hello

I've got another local P.o.W who I need some assistance with.

I wondered if anyone could help with the circumstances of his capture at all?

All I know is that he was an Air Gunner, and a P.o.W. in Germany by September 1943. His 21st birthday was in the Coming of Age announcements in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle of September 15th 1943.

    Many thanks

One of those where I thought the order of the first names differs from family to official record.

Whitley Z6730 again possibly as I had not resolved the actual Henderson onboard.

    Thanks for the reply Ross.

I see that the ASN (which I know is sometimes not always 100% correct...) has 657014 Sgt. W. Henderson on Z6730:

    https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/205276

    Full list of crew:

    R/97584 Sgt J J Makarewicz RCAF PoW/4B Muhlberg (Elbe)/PoW Number 337.
    1085010 Sgt L L Brown PoW/Stalag 357 Kopernikus/PoW Number 310.
    1378055 Sgt R Hale PoW/Stalag 4B Muhlberg (Elbe)/PoW Number 222822.
    1072420 Sgt P Bell PoW/Stalag 356 Lwow (Lemberg)/PoW Number 308.
    657014 Sgt W Henderson PoW/Stalag Luft 6 Heydekrug/PoW Number 323.

He's in Air 78 as 657014 HENDERSON William. However, that's seemingly not 100% correct, as the Aberdeen Evening Express of July 16th 1943 reported the following, just to add to the mix:

    Prisoner of War
The following name appears among a list of British airmen, now prisoners of war, having been shot down in raids on Continental cities, which was obtained from a German source:
657014 Sergt. William John Henderson, 28 Willowbank Road, Aberdeen.

It doesn't seem like it's my Henderson, as his family address is Rothwell Road, Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

    Regards

    Simon

Many thanks indeed for posting that Mojmir.

I'd struggled to find 'my' Henderson in the Casualty Communiques in Flight, so that's very helpful indeed.

In light of the Allen entry I suspect he bailed out of an aircraft prior to Nov 1943 in which the plane got home as well

My father was the W/op on Z6730, and in his Wartime Log (Red Cross) he has an address for W Henderson as being in Brora, Sutherland.

William John Henderson 657014 was on Z6730 which was lost 26-JUN-1942 - According to WO416 WO 416/172/466 he was born 29/06/1914 in Buckie Scotland, so he is the one with the Brora, Sutherland and 57014 Sergt. William John Henderson, 28 Willowbank Road, Aberdeen. addresses

He is also on German 'Registration of Foreigners and German Persecutees 1939-1947
William John Henderson Buckie 657014 29.6.?? Year not specified but has to be 1914 (see above). Date of capture 26.6.42

He is on AIR 78/74/11 page 219 as plain William Henderson, 657014

There is a Second "William John Henderson on WO416 (WO 416/172/385) with a date of birth in 1922 - So not released under 100 Years rule until 2023 - I would image this F/Sgt HENDERSON John William 1025678 based on the age and he being 21 in 1943 as per:

"All I know is that he was an Air Gunner, and a P.o.W. in Germany by September 1943. His 21st birthday was in the Coming of Age announcements in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle of September 15th 1943".

However is on AIR 78/74/11 page 234 as John William Henderson 1025678 and that is what he is on Under POW List on Find My Past

I wonder if he was baptized John William but known to family as William John. But defo 'Willie' as per newspaper

HENDERSON (Rothwell Road Gosforth). Congratulations and
loving birthday greeting to our dear Willie (Sergt Air Gunner.
R.A.F.), now prisoner war in Germany, on his 21st birthday.
Our thoughts are ever with you. May God grant you a safe
and speedy return is our earnest wish to you From father,
sister Isobel, gran, uncle Bobby and auntie Gladys, and
uncle Bert and all friends who love you.

So I think he is the below (and his sister)

    Thanks Paul

Yes, I'm sure that's him. The birth date obviously ties in with the newspaper entries from 1943 and 1944. His father and grandfather were also named John William Henderson - I guess that's why he was known as Billy?
