McDougall was onboard Mosquito HX984 of No.13 OTU, the aircraft was heard broadcasting a mayday by ground stations at Valley and Woodvale, the latter attempted to assist with QDMs to Woodvale. It crashed at "Ford Hall" which seems to be a corruption of Bidston Hall (Bidston cum Ford).

This is the entry from Valley's ORB:
May 30th 1944, “During the afternoon a Mosquito from Bicester was heard calling “Mayday” on Command Guard. Unfortunately it was impossible to get a bearing on the aircraft and despite the assistance of Woodvale the aircraft crashed near Birkenhead, one of the crew being killed and the other injured.”

LAWRENCE, William John - LAC - 958829 - died in a road accident

    AIRMAN KILLED
Newquay Story Of Motor Cycle Accident
That death was due to an accident, the cause of which there was no evidence to show, was returned the County Coroner (Mr. L. J. Carlyon) at an inquest Newquay yesterday on Ldg. Acm. William John Lawrence, RA.F., aged 26, who was fatally injured on Tuesday morning while riding a motor cycle. Evidence was given Mrs. Ivy Ould, of 12. New-road, Summercourt, who said that while walking along the road she stepped on to the hedge as vehicles going in opposite directions were about to pass each other. When the vehicles had passed she turned and saw deceased and his motor cycle, the handlebars of which struck her, and the driver fell on to the road. She asked deceased he were hurt and he replied he had hurt his stomach. The driver a vehicle going in the' same direction as motor cyclist said that after pas-sing Mrs. Ould he Rooked through his mirror and saw the airman lying in the road and the motor cycle the hedge. Pulling up he went back and asked Lawrence if he were hurt and the airman indicated! his chest. Dr. F. D. M. Hocking, pathologist at Royal Cornwall Infirmary, said death was due to syncope due to internal hemorrhage, consistent with the heavy blow on the upper part of the chest.
