Default The incredible story of PoW 580715 Michael Joseph JOYCE

    All

How do we categorise this one in the Pow DB?

Also can anyone tie Richard Joseph Joyce 580715 1935 Royal Air Force -> 580715 Michael Joseph JOYCE (51894).

I believe that 580715 Joyce was awarded the MM for POW activities in the London Gazette 14 Nov 1944 but that it was cancelled in the London Gazette 4 June 1946 where he was identified as 580715 Sergeant (now Flying Officer) Michael Joseph Joyce RAF. Wasnt he cousin of Lord Haw Haw and worked for the Germans.

Warrant Officer (580715) Michael Joseph JOYCE had been commissioned Pilot Officer (51894). 24 Feb 1943. I hadnt seen any ref to the Richard name

Sorry, Paul. What incredible story are you talking about - no links, no clues, etc?

The whole story of Joyce's treachery is explained in Oliver Clutton-Brock's "Footprints" chapter on traitors and collaborators.

Jagan, page 185 explains that all that could be done to him was "deprive him of the Military Medal and oblige him to resign his commission. Any further action against him was barred by Section 161 of the Air Force Act"

Section 161 states "A person shall not in pursuance of this Act be tried or punished for any offence triable by court-martial committed more than three years before the date at which his trial begins, except in the case of the offence of mutiny, desertion or fraudulent enlistment"

    Regards,

    Dave
