    Default 81684 Desmond Balmforth RAFVR

Does anyone have any information on the above airman? I have him enlisting circa 1937 as 749507 and then being commissioned as PO from LAC on the 29th June 1940, FO 30th June 1941 and Flt 30th June 1942. He came from Belfast where he worked for the Ulster Bank.
He flew as an Observer with 78 Squadron from 9th September 1940 through to 17th November 1940, completing 11 operations. I then have no record of him whatsoever. The only mentions in the London Gazette are for his promotions, shown above. I can't find any record of him being made POW or being awarded any form of decoration; nor can I find his discharge from the RAFVR. I believe he returned to Belfast and died their in 1963.

Any suggestions as to what happened to him from November 1940 onwards welcomed.

    Thanks

    Daz

The Belfast News of February 17th 1944 mentions him in an article and records that he was serving as a Flight Lieutenant and instructor with an 'R.A.F. Flying School in the heart of rural Ulster', and that he had been a member of 502 (Ulster) Bombing Squadron, and had 'a score of raids to his credit.'

    He's also mentioned here:

    Hello,

    Relinquishment:

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...upplement/6001

AE = Air Efficiency Award - In Simon's post, the link has Balmforth with the postnominal of AE. I can't locate Balmforth's name in the following:

The Air efficiency Award 1942-2005 A History and a Nominal Roll of British and Commonwealth Recipients.

Thank you both for your help. Looks like he went into the training system and didn't return to operations.
