Default De Havilland Aircraft Co. Ltd. + North Circular Road in Cricklewood

    Hi all,

I have a record of a Fitter from a figher Squadron equipped with Spitfires V being attached for course to "Messrs De Havilland Aircraft Co. Ltd. North Circular Road Cricklewood" in Autumn 1942.
De Havilland propellers were used on Spitfires V so it seems to me OK. Unfortunately I am unable to find any reference to any De Havilland factory in Cricklewood. So far I have found references only about Hadley Page factory at North Circular Road in Cricklewood.

Does it make any sense he would pass the course on De Havilland propellers at the Hadley Page factory at North Circular Road in Cricklewood?

Any comments will be much appreciated.

    TIA

    Hi Pavel
DeHavilland did take over the old Car Mart/Kennings Car Mart - repair Depot at Cricklewood during WW2,I believe they did early development of the Goblin Jet Engine there (and possibly other things ).
I think it was on the edge of Brent Reservoir, probably between around NW2 7AH and the A5 road - I had a look on google street view and 719 Nth Circular Rd has some old factory type buildings at the back away from the N Circ Rd,there were quite a few Industrial Units and Factories there during and after the war.

De Havilland possibly were between the Red Place Marker and the A5 (Edgware Road).

    Hi Pavel

There were many industrial units there at Brent Reservoir and I have not managed to ID the exact group (yet).
It was getting late for digging last night but here is a clip from the NLS Georeferenced Map website of an OS 1:1,250/1:2,500 (1944-70) map which shows all of the industrial buildings at Brent Reservoir. The map is probably 1950's but the buildings were probably much as they were during the war.

From an article in de Havilland Aeronautical Technical School Association 2014

    https://www.dhaetsa.org.uk/dhaets/do...bury_iss.3.pdf

Looks like DH had quite a presence around Welsh Harp/Staples Corner/N Circular...

I was ‘promoted’to Engineering Apprentice, being interviewed for such by Jock Brodie in his office. This was in the requisitioned Car Mart premises in Edgware Road near Staples Corner
and Kemps requisitioned biscuit factory just round the corner on the North Circular Road, where we assembled Gipsy engines amongst other things.
And just to add that Kemps Biscuit Factory is on the N Circular Rd and annotated ''Empress Biscuit Works'' in the NLS map in the previous post,it is a very large building and could well have housed a training School.
