Default Request For Deciphered Unknown Surname

    Hello All,
    Does anybody know who:
Sgt R ANTEHLEY really is? He went “in the bag” (Baled Out of Wellington 1c X9884 of 214 Sqdn nr Hamburg) on 1941-09-29. I’ve tried all sorts of Surname variations in all the ‘usual places’, but nothing comes up. I must be doing something wrong? I want his Forename, and Service Number, please. And the Forum entries for this a/c do not look very good?? Can the expert decipherers have a go?
    TIA
    Peter Davies

    Peter

Possibly a (rather big!) typo for Critchley?

    Simon,
Brilliant. That's him on AIR 78/39/7 Image 183 R4C1. I propose to change the POW s/sht entry to that (Silent Consent applies), and keep ANTEHLEY with a note to go to CRITCHLEY.

Harry Critchley was reported as being a P.o.W. in a short article in the Liverpool Express of November 3rd 1941, having previously been reported missing (the article includes a photo of him). His address is given as Manchester Road, Warrington. Oddly the Liverpool Echo reported the same news, but on November 26th, with the same photo.

    Hi Peter

It's definitely Critchley not Antehley. I spotted that and got the guys running the 214 Sqn website to correct it. To be fair, there is a bit of a 'blob' on the copy of the ORB making the typing a bit indistinct, so I could see how it could have been misread. However I cross-checked it against the text on other pages where it was clearer. It would also make sense if he was by any chance a smallish bloke, leading to him getting a rhyming nickname.
