    Malcolm,
    Another question mark !
CWGC has date of death Lac Sidney HEALD 29th MARCH 1942.
GRO list 29th OCTOBER 1942 on SS Abosso.
For the time being keep the date 29-3-1942 as is in the Runnymede Register.
    Regards,
    Henk.

All of the above are dated 29 Oct on CWGC, they are only a sample of the names for Abosso, the familyrelatives.com site I use has not transcribed the vessel name for S Heald so I can't trust the search engine to find them all, plus some might be listed as MV Abosso.

29/03/1942 versus 29/10/1942 I can't see how this would be a scanning error in the CWGC but who knows what the computers were doing.

This Uboat.net thread leads to a number of things.

Found on the web that troopship SS Abosso left Cape Town 8-10-1942 bound for Liverpool and was spotted 29-10-1942 by U-575 somewhere between Newfoundland and Ireland. Torpedoed 19.42 hrs and sunk 48.30N-28.50W, what was approx. 700 miles NW of the Azores. Difficult to understand that the missing airmen/passengers are commemorated on the Alamein- resp. Singapore Memorial.
    Regards,
    Henk.

Re Blenheim N3561, I cant really add alot other than the correct location should read "Sherburn in Elmet, Yorkshire". There are other Sherburns in Yorkshire which are not linked to this incident.

    Hi Henk,

F1180 for Havoc BB911 of No.1454 Flight has

LAC (Flight: AC1) James F. READ - 933693 struck in back of head whilst turning prop. Switches were supposedley off and airman was "blowing out" - engine fired killing him instantly.

AOC - Suggests switches must have been on and that pilot had switched off the radio which is in the proximity.

His rank given in the F1180 is AC1.

    Regards
    Ross
