    Default Air Bomber training, 1943

    Hello, Forumites.
I am researching an Air Bomber, F/S Herbert, who was assigned to 37 and 40 Squadrons whilst in the M E. From his records, it seems he undertook his AB training in Africa, the Units being:

    5, 43, 48 and 100 AS (Armament School??)

Has anybody information on this aspect of RAF aircrew training?
    Many thanks

    Hi Andy

AS = Air School, all SAAF units.

Their ORBs were available from TNA, free of charge, but I'm sure whether they are still there.

If you have problems, let me know I downloaded them years ago.

    Hi Andy
Bomb Aimers (Air Bombers) were quite often U/T Pilots who had been 'chopped'/'Washed Out' (withdrawn) from Pilot Training and been remustered to A/B.
Quite useful in one way - in that it meant that at least one crew member on a Bomber would have had some flying experience and could take over if necessary.
Some captains gave rudimentary flying training to (say) Flight Eng or another crew member who was keen/with aptitude - also some rear crew were (older)ex pilots so it would vary greatly with each individual crew.
