    Hi,
a friend of mine is trying to find out what F/O D R Metcalf may have done to warrant the award of a DFC, does anybody have access to the DFC books or have a copy of his recommendation?

    Thanks in advance,

DFC gazetted 20 February 1945 for service in No,158 Squadron. Air Ministry Bulletins often gave citations not published in the London Gazette (best bet, AMB 17647) but at this stage of the war even the AMBs frequently just listed periodic awards. Best bet is to find the original recommendation at Kew- suggest AIR 2/8829, AIR 2/8830 or AIR 2/8831.

His D.F.C. award was reported in the Newcastle Journal of Tuesday Febryary 20th 1945, page 3:

PARTLY UNCONSCIOUS PILOT FLEW BOMBER HOME FROM STUTTGART
Soon after his plane had bombed Stuttgart last March, Pilot Officer Donald Richard Metcalf’s oxygen supply failed and he lost consciousness, partly recovering then the bomb aimer rendered first aid.
Two of the engines had failed, but Metcalf, though extremely ill, gave directions which brought the engines back into service.
By expert handling he enabled the bomber to be flown back to Britain. He is awarded the D.F.C.
Pilot Officer Metcalf, who is 19, was born at Gateshead and lives in Newcastle. He was educated at South Shields High School, and, after service in the ranks, was commissioned in July, 1944.

    Aged 19...!

Metcalf was the Flight Engineer, and the Air Bomber 179517 William David Davies also received the D.F.C., as reported in the Northern Daily Mail (the Hartlepool Mail) also on February 20th:

    COURAGE AND DEVOTION
    D.F.C. FOR BLACKHALL PILOT OFFICER
The D.F.C. has been awarded to Pilot Officer William David Davies (179517), R.A.F.V.R., No. 158 Squadron, who belongs to Blackhall Colliery. The official citation says:-
“This officer has taken part in many operational sorties. In March, 1944, he was air bomber in an aircraft detailed for a mission to Stuttgart. Shortly after leaving the target area, two engines failed, and for a time the aircraft became uncontrollable. Pilot Officer Davies found the flight engineer unconscious through failure of the oxygen supply. After rendering first aid to his comrade, he assisted him in bringing the engines into service again. By his coolness and efficient help this officer materially contributed to the safe return of the aircraft to base.
“Throughout his tour of duty he has displayed most praiseworthy efficiency and initiative. In the face of the enemy he has inspired the other members of his crew by his courage and devotion to duty.”
Pilot Officer Davies was born in 1922 and was educated at Henry Smith Secondary School, Hartlepool, which he left after completing a five years’ course in 1938. He enlisted in January 1941, and was commissioned in July 1944.

From the ORB, I'm guessing possibly March 15/16 1944, Halifax III LW635 NP-M?

    Regards

    Simon
