Small correction to the above - Sgt Mongey was aboard a separate aircraft to the above three, serial not recorded.

    AIR 27/243/14

"To bomb enemy armoured columns on the LE CATEAU - CAMBRAI road. A mixed load of 2 250lbs 6 40lbs and 12 20lbs bombs was carried. Raid successfully carried out, no opposition."

    Blenheim IV (No serial recorded)
    F/O Stuart
    Sgt Borthwick
    LAC James
    Duty: Bombing
    Time up: 1104
    Time down: --

Aircraft failed to return from task as above. Believed shot down in flames. Crew posted as missing.

    Blenheim IV (No serial recorded)
    P/O Whelan
    Sgt Mongey
    LAC Brown
    Duty: Bombing
    Time up: 1106
    Time down: --

Took off on task as above. Shortly after reaching the area aircraft was attacked by 8 Me 110. The Air Observer was killed almost immediately by a direct hit from a cannon shell.
Subsequently the port engine of the aircraft was set on fire, and whilst endeavouring to climb to allow the Air Gunner to bail out, the pilot lost control of the aircraft, but succeeded in regaining sufficient control to pancake the aircraft into the ground.
The pilot was badly burned and broke an arm, whilst the Air Gunner was unhurt
During the combat the Air Gunner noticed a BLENHEIM aircraft falling in flames a few miles away. This aircraft is presumed to have been that of F/O Stuart

    Regards,

    Jeff
