    Hello,

    Go to: http://rcawsey.co.uk/Acc1939.htm - check under 6/5/38.

    Fri 6/Sat 7 May 1938.
    TRAINING COMMAND.
    Solo night training.
5 Flying Training School, RAF (Sealand, Flintshire - 23 Group)

Hawker Audax I K5598 - completed a perfect first landing, bounced on the second then stalled and crashed from 500 feet during the overshoot. The pilot died on the 6th but the accident time is not known. It may in fact have occurred on the evening of the 5/6 May.

Pilot: Act Plt Off Errol Desmond GIMSON RAF - Age 22. 89hrs.

    See FYT1/62

Amendments to Volumes One & Two - Volume One:

p.62 - GIMSON, E D - buried at Hawarden. The Times (London) states that the accident occurred on Friday.

    See: FYT3/545.

    And from The Times:

Acting Pilot Officer Errol Desmond Gimson lost his life in an accident at Sealand on Friday to an aircraft of No.5 Flying Training School. Sealand, Queen's Ferry, Chester. He was the sole occupant.

    The Times. May 9, 1938, p.11 (Issue 47989).

    Thanks Col, that's interesting.

However it must be another crash that I'm looking for, definitely in June, it involved Corpl. Kellaway (pilot) who ended up in a drainage ditch just off the airfield perimeter, the aircraft photo shows it upside down. He recalled "feeling a bit of a clot, hanging trapped upside down in the cockpit with fuel dripping all around". He was eventually freed almost unhurt.

    cheers Pete
