Default Aiming point certificates and Raid Cards

    Hi,

I have found a picture of a raid card in the gallery relating to the raid I am researching.

    http://www.rafcommands.com/galleries/members/Aiming-point-certificates-and-Raid-Cards/DusseldorfStephenscrew106Squadron

Can anybody tell me where the original card is? I would like to ask for a scan and the permission to use it in my book about the raid.

    Thanks.

    Best wishes.

Marcel: I believe “Target Tokens” were given to the Bomb Aimer (Air Bomber) of the crew, and examples likely came from the collections of those individuals who had been awarded them. They were given in recognition of a job well done and probably don’t have any additional significance, i.e.were not an official squadron record. Others could probably provide additional comments, and I can certainly stand to be corrected if I am wrong.

Dad had quite an extensive collection of “strike photos” from his sorties. In fact it turns out they were a complete record, i.e., there were no additional photos on record with Library and Archives, Canada. For whatever reason, there are no photos that exist from other sorties. Dad mentioned that they had an “Aiming Point” photo for his raid to Mathias Stinnes, March 24, 1945, but the photo in his collection is not marked as such. Perhaps the example in LAC is marked as such.

    Hi Jim,
thanks for your answer. Did I understand correctly that you do not have a strike photo of the raid on 12.6.1943?

Marcel. I have 35 strike photos from 6 Group Squadrons, if any help.

    Hi Richard,

thanks for your message. I have some of 6 group too. It would be good to know if these are the same as I have. Do you know the source of those you have and of which squadrons these are?

Marcel: further to Richard’s comments. To be clear, an “Aiming Point Photo” is a strike photo that clearly shows what the intelligence section has determined to be the aiming point. So there are many strike photos out there, but from what I understand, only a small subset of these show the aiming point. I believe that a Target Token might be given to the crew in that case. Richard might be able to provide more information on the determination of an aiming point photo.

No, dad was not on that raid, so I don’t have a strike photo for that raid.

    Hi Jim, hi Richard,

yes I would think so too, that the aiming point photos are the ones showing the aiming point, so lets speak of target photos ... :-)

@ Richard: I think that I have the same photos as you have. Some have red marlings on it, showing that the aiming point can be seen on the photo, but I cannot see any aminig point. That must have been done by the specialists with their means.

    Best
