Default Pre-War Unaccounted Airman for Jon Heywood

    Jon

A couple of weeks ago I asked if you could help with maybe some unaccounted pre-war airman - I have focused on my Sept 1939 data and will look back earlier I have a 4 queries for the last 3 days of peace - i wonder if you could check for me ? Many Thanks Paul

    1) Alfred Winstanley EASTWOOD #214426 Died suddenly 2nd Sept 1939 Suddenly at Halton Aerodrome where he was instructor - Assumed post RAF discharge death? Rank ??

    2) Corporal Phillip Walter HOPWOOD #854497 Auxiliary Air Force Killed 2 September 1939 by lightning during a thunderstorm at Liverpool while serving with his unit - Was this a Balloon Sqn ??

    3) Aircraftman 2nd Class John MURPHY #617586 Died before commencement of hostilities 1 -2 September 1939??? Date and Circumstances (may be before Sept 1939)

    see http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...342#post126342

Real Mystery as he is in 2nd RAF Casualty List of WW2 (25th Sept 1939) as Missing but by 3rd Oct 1939 this has been corrected to
"Previously shown as missing. now reported died before commencement of hostilities: — 617586 Aircraftman 2nd CI. J. Murphy."

his service number indicates enlistment in 1938 and I have a Death registered as Murphy John 20 Bromsgrove Qtr 3 - but may not be him

    4) Ernest NEWELL #23973 died Died 1-2 September 1939 Aged 54 at Elham, Kent, England born 1885 - Assumed post RAF discharge death? Date of death and Rank ??

If you have an Ancestry or FMP log in, it looks like he has a service record in AIR 79 - might help?

ETA: Actually, so do Eastwood and (i think Murphy) - I didn't realise service records were (relatively) freely available this late

I can't put a split date in Excel so I went for 2 Sep.

I had Murphy as 617586 but you quoted 627686 in post #5
