Air 81 states that L/A Batten was killed (on February 10th?), but the 'World War II Index to Allied Airmen Roll of Honour, 1939-1945' on ancestry records that the Magister "stalled and crashed at Streatley 5 miles north of Luton, Beds during a training flight, the Pilot U/T Survived."

There's no Batten in ADM 104 that matches. Can't seem to find him on any sites with those initials, either. Perhaps a typo or two in the Air 81 transcript on the NA website, bearing in mind it has the wrong date too?

Burley and Caird were in Master N8043 (ABS and Wreck Recovery in Britain).

Master N2043 went to SAAF in July 1941 from 9 BGS.

    Hello,

    KENYA.
VAN der SPUY, Sybrandt Johannes -F/Sgt - 47242 - SAAF.

The only casualties suffered by No. 12 Squadron, S.A.A.F., in Somaliland were due to an accident at Garissa. A machine-gunner cleaning his weapons with petrol set the tray alight. Running to the door of the grass hut he threw the blazing contents over Flight-Sergeant Van der Spuy. In his book, Theirs is the Glory*, Stuart McCreath described how the burning man fell among the huts, setting fire to them in a blaze that destroyed the armoury and all but destroyed the ammunition dump. Four gunners were badly burnt and Flight-Sergeant Van der Spuy died of his injuries.
