    Default 268 Sqn claim 14 May 1943

    Hello,

If I'm not wrong F/Sgt FJ Barnes of 268 made a claim over a Fw190 destroyed on 14 May 1943. There are various FJ Barnes but does anyone know his full idendity?

Also, do we know in which Mustang he was flying as the ORB doesn't give any detail on that point.

    TIA

    Phil

I reckon this could this be 1382781 Frederick John Barnes D.F.M., whose medal award was gazetted in July 1943?

    Citation as follows:

    Air 2/8966
Since this N.C.O. has been in this squaron, he has taken part in the following operations:- 8 Lagoons, 3 Rhubarbs, 3 interceptor patrols, 1 diversion sweep. He has seen 64,000 tons of shipping plus numerous escorts. He has taken part in three Rhubarbs inclduing the Amersfoort raid. He has been through concentrated flak off the Dutch coast and has had many combats with enemy aircraft. His score is one F.W. 190 destroyed, one F.W. 190 probably destroyed and one Do.217 damaged. He has attacked barges and locomotives in Holland.
    17th May 1942

I believe that Coilin Ford the 268 Sqn historian, who is a regular visitor here, is a bit busy at the moment. Simon is correct in his identification. I don't think Colin has identified the aircraft.
