SCHOLEFIELD, Anthony, F/O (61229, RAFVR) - No. 608 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 26 February 1943. Born 1920 in Ilfracombe. Enlisted 1939 (902903), commissioned 3 February 1941. To Reserve as Flight Lieutenant, “retaining the rank of Squadron Leader”. 11 July 1950. Citation in AMB 9390.

This officer completed a strenuous and exceptionally successful tour of operational flying before being posted to Africa. He was employed for twelve months on sorties and patrols off the Norwegian and Danish coasts where he encountered heavy opposition. On operations on North Africa Flying Officer Scholefield has flown over 125 hours. On one occasion while flying on an anti-submarine sweep, he sighted a fully surfaced Italian submarine. He made a skillful and accurate attack and seriously damaged the vessel. At all times this officer has maintained a high example of personal conduct and efficiency.
