For context I have had to sort out around 145 Aviation related deaths in 1934 and these are the ones where I have nothing...


1) Albert Edward Scriven 341026 Died 5 April 1934 Ancestry Family Tree?

2) Sidney POLLARD 513405 Died 14 September 1934 ? Rank and Cause? Ancestry Family Tree?

3) Edwin Herbert Seddon 516818 Died Feb 1934 aged 35 Aylesbury Date, Rank and Cause?

1. Albert Edward Scriven 341026 - the National Probate Calendar records that he died on July 25th 1934 at Princess Mary Hospital, Halton Camp. His address is listed as 38 Married Quarters, R.A.F. Abingdon. He was born on August 12th 1899 at Portsmouth.

2. Sidney POLLARD 513405 - the National Probate Calendar has a Sidney Pollard, died September 14th 1934 at Wendover, Buckinghamshire. Nothing further on ancestry, nor in the newspapers on FMP.

3. Edwin Herbert Seddon 516818 - there's an Edwin H. Seddon aged 18, death registered Uxbridge Jan-Feb-Mar 1934?

4. John REDMAN 565126 - nothing, sorry.

5. Leonard William Read 526638 - his death was reported in the Daily News of May 1st 1934:

R.A.F. Man's Rail Fate
After joining in the songs at a party at his home in Whippendell-road, Watford, and saying goodbye to his fiancee, Aircraftman Leonard Read was killed by a train two miles away on the L.M.S. railway line outside Watford. He had left to rejoin his unit at St Albans.

8. Charles Hector BARNABY 350625 - the Daily News of February 7th 1934 has the following:

Insurance Claims Paid
The following payments are in respect of claims from areas supplied by Southern Editions:
£100 to Mrs. L. Barnaby, of 16, Married Quarters, R.A.F., South Farnborough (now "Brecon," 30, Fellows-road, South Farnborough), whose husband, Charles Hector Barnaby, a corporal in the R.A.F., struck his head against a bath when he apparently tripped over a rug and fell at his home, and died at Cambridge Hospital, Aldershot, following his injuries.

9. Sydney Brown - the Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website has the following:

Sydney Brown, Corporal, Royal Air Force, Single, aged 26
Son of Archibald Albert Brown, Police Constable and Augusta Jane Brown
Died June 20th 1934 at 00.45 a.m. at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary
Usual residence Turnhouse, Edinburgh
Death due to cerebral laceration and fractured skull, sustained by being knocked down by a motor car.

10. Richard Buchanan Possible 563067 - if it's the right person, his death was announced in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle of June 20th 1934:

BUCHANAN - 63, Hamilton Street, 18 June, Richard, dearly beloved son of Amy and the late Richard Buchanan. Interment Elswick Cemetery Thursday.

11. George Brown - a real needle in a haystack, I'm afraid!

12. William Green Tone - newspaper accounts report that the accident on September 15th, occurred when he and Hendry Warkman were returning to Leuchars from Tayport on a motorcycle. Both were found injured by the side of the road. Tone died in King's Cross Hospital, Dundee of his injuries and meningitis. Warkman suffered lacerations to his face and a broken leg. The accounts record Tone as "a Leuchars airman."
Both men were originally from Newcastle, but a family tree on ancestry records that Tone was born in 1913 at Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham, son of Richard Tone and Agnes Tone, nee Green.

Also thanks for the pointer to Read - found date of death in another report as Monday 30th April 1934

I now understand some dates of death a bit better - for Drownings - (when there is no evidence of when entered body) it is when the body is found even though it could have been in the sea or river a number of days - here is an example


Corporal George Lyle COWAN 354389

Date of Death 7th Jan 1935 - The day his body recovered, but in all probability he went into the water days earlier as his wife had not been told over a fortnight earlier he was missing


Drowned (probable suicide) 7 Jan 1935

Note: Body Recovered Wapping Monday 7th Jan 1935 - Date Recovered = Date Of Death

Portsmouth Evening News - Monday 14 January 1935

IDENTIFIED BY PORTSMOUTH WIDOW Disappeared After Leave
The body of man drowned in the Thames. upon whom an inquest was
held Greenwich last Tuesday, was to-day identified at Deptford as that of
George Lyle Cowan (35), a corporal in the Royal Air Force, stationed Uxbridge.
A verdict of found drowned had been recorded previously, but to-day it was
amended after evidence had been heard. Evidence of identification was given by the widow,
Mrs. Doris Cowan, of Wallington Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, who said that she recognized the
features and also raincoat. Her husband had been in the Royal Air Force for some years,
and she last saw him alive in September. A fortnight ago she was told he was missing.
The Coroner (Dr, H. Whitehouse);Has ever threatened take his life?— Once or twice,
but we did not take any notice it.


Another example is Aircraftman 1st Class Francis Harry 'Frank' ALLEN 563709 RAF Henlow who committed suicide in the Thames (he couldn't face being separated from his Fiancée for 5 years while he was serving in Egypt) - His body recovered 11 Feb 1935 (which is date I am recording and is what I think will appear on official records) - but he went missing 9th Jan 1935

Archibald Albert Brown is his father, and his address is given as 33 Armada Road, Cawsand, near Plymouth. The National Probate Calendar records that he was still living there when he died in hospital on July 11th 1949. I think A B Brown is Archibald Robert Brown, Sydney's brother, who is recorded as being granted his father's probate and is listed a retired police constable (he was born in 1899).

Not him, I think. His death was reported in the Bedfordshire Times of April 13th 1934:

The death took place on 6th April of a familiar and much respected inhabitant, Mr. John Redman. He died at his home, at Keeley Corner. Mr. Redman had been in business as a wheelwright and undertaker and estates carpenter in succession to his father, and was well known throughout this part of the county. He leaves three sons, all engaged in the business, and one daughter.

His death certificate confirms he was at Leuchars but gives cerebro-spinal meningitis as the only cause of death.

Seems he contracted meningitis while in hospital being treated for his injuries. He had been originally taken to St. Andrews Cottage Hospital with severe head injuries, but was transferred to Dundee Royal Infirmary the day after the accident. He was then transferred to King's Cross Hospital the day before he died due to him contracting infectious meningitis.

Does it give his rank Malcolm? I've not got enough credits for the Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website at the moment.
