Seems he contracted meningitis while in hospital being treated for his injuries. He had been originally taken to St. Andrews Cottage Hospital with severe head injuries, but was transferred to Dundee Royal Infirmary the day after the accident. He was then transferred to King's Cross Hospital the day before he died due to him contracting infectious meningitis.

Does it give his rank Malcolm? I've not got enough credits for the Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website at the moment.
