    410507 - Unaccounted Airmen - 07-05-1941

    EGYPT
    McDONALD, Robert Haldane - F/O - 42316 - RAF.
    Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
    Gladiator II - N5823 - 112 Sqdn.

    IRAQ
    ROBINSON, Douglas William - Sgt(Obs) - 749373 - RAFVR - 70 Sqdn.
    Basra War Cemetery, Iraq.
    Died of Wounds at WASHASH Aerodrome: 6th May : Sgt Robinson was injured in the leg in action on May 2nd.
    But AIR 81/6316 has him as killed,Wellington Ic "2828"(T2828) on the 7th ?

    MACE, Ernest William - Lac - 542549 - RAF - 4 SFTS.
    Died of wounds received at Habbaniyah during an enemy air raid on 6 May 41.

    SKINNER, George Edmund - Cpl - 570589 - RAF - Air Depot.
    SMITH, John - Lac - 541366 - RAF - Air Depot.
    Both were killed at RAF Habbinya in an air raid.

    These three airmen rest at Habbaniya War Cemetery, Iraq.

    HESKETH, Henry - Cpl - 855283 - RAF (AAF).
    Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
    Died of wounds received at Habbaniyah during an enemy air raid on 6 May 41.

    MATTHEWS, John Clive - AC1c - 985497 - RAFVR - 938 Balloon Sqdn.
    Darlington West Cemetery, Durham.
    Died as a result of enemy action - Exact details unclear - but probaly an Air Raid.

    PATTERSON, Henry Pitney - AC2c - 854403 - RAF (AAF).
    Liverpool (Anfield) Cemetery, Lancashire.
    Almost certainly Killed in Air Raid on Liverpool on May 7th 1941 - National Probate Calendar records that he was 'believed to have been killed through war operations on 7 May 1941 and whose dead body was found on May 8 1941.' His address is given as 57 Edinburgh Street, Liverpool.

    STEVENS, Charles Leslie - AC2c - 1142908 - RAFVR - 3 RC.
    Birmingham (Yardley) Cemetery, Warwickshire.
    He was taken dangerously ill on 3 April|. Died of peritonitis following acute appendicitis.

    WHITEHEAD, George William - Sgt - 747027 - RAFVR.
    Hull Northern Cemetery, Yorkshire.
    Killed in an air raid on RAF Scampton.

    THOMPSON, Arthur Theophilus - Cpl - 2399 - RAAF
    These five airmen are commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore.
    They were crew of Hudson - A16-25 - 1 Sqdn RAAF.

    Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey.

    SCOTT, Cyril Valentine Robert - Sgt - 542021 - RAF.
    Islington Cemetery and Crematorium, Middlesex.

    The above four airmen were crew of Blenheim IV - Z5758 - 1(C) OTU.

    Bridgewater (Quantock Road) Cemetery, Somerset.

    EBERT, Emily- GAF.
    GIRSTLE, Karl - GAF.

    These seven German Airmen rest at Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery, Staffordshire.
    Cause of death ?

    ZIMBABWE
    WILLIS, Sydney Ralph - Sgt(UT/Pilot) - 1256686 - RAFVR .
    Bulawayo (Athlone) Cemetery, Zimbabwe.

    ROBINSON, Douglas William - Sgt(Obs) - 749373 - his death was reported in the Chelmsford Chronicle of May 16th 1941:

    Sergt. Douglas William Robinson, R.A.F., aged 23, only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Robinson, late of the Grosvenor Hotel, Westcliff, has died of wound received on service. He was educated at Bishop's Stortford College.

    The 70 Sqn Detachment ORB Form 540 records that a Sgt. Robinson was hit in the leg on May 1/2 1941, in a Wellington flown by W/C Goldings. Serial T2828?

    HANSMANN, Gerd Hauptmann, observer & COENEN, Werner Oberleuntnant Pilot. Ju88A-5 MC+CK of 3 Staffel/ Kustenfliegergruppe 906. Shot down at night by Defiant flown by Flt.Lt. E.C Wolfe and Gunner Sgt. A Ashcroft. Hansmann and Coenen were killed due to bailing out too low. There were two survivors Radio Operator, Oberfeldwebel Ernst Langanki who was uninjured and survived the war. Gunnner Feldwebel Willi Muller suffered a broken back and has the distinction of being hanged along with 3 other POW’s and a child murderer in Alberta’s last mass hanging. Muller and the other 3 POW's were convicted for murdering another POW Dr. Karl Lehmann.

    Note the difference in spelling of the name. Also the day is given as 8th May, presumably as a result of it being a night sortie.
