Records for No. 5 Maintenance Unit - Summer 1944

Does anyone know if there are any records from 5 MU available for the period August to September 1944. I am guessing that they were the unit tasked with recovering a wrecked Halifax which crashed near Cheltenham.

Hi Daz

5 MU was an Aircraft Storage Unit in No 40 Group so wouldn't be tasked with a recovery. It would have been assigned to a MU in No 43 Group, possibly No 50 MSU at Warminster.

Yes it is the same aircraft. I have been interested in this crash for a number of years and always puzzled by it, as it has a lot of oddities which don’t make sense. One of which is why there was no fire when the aircraft crashed, especially as it was supposed to have over 600 gallons of fuel onboard when it crashed. Hence I’ve started to look for any other reports which may give some clues to what happened.

I’m also going to check 3 Glider Training School who were tasked with providing personnel for the Court of Inquiry.
