    Tom,

Robert Cecil Hayes, born Lisburn, Ireland 13 June 1920. Deceased Kelowna, British Columbia 20 March 1996. Death registration has him as "Military" and under "type of work" Air Force.

Wife and son's obituaries confirm he spent his career in the RCAF/Canadian Armed Forces.

Edited to add: This may also be the wrong man as the ranks don't match!

    Regards,

    Dave

174 Squadron ORB for 10th April 1945 provides service number of 934055 for F/Sgt K C Mackenzie on transfer to 245 Squadron.
No matching Air 78 entry on Forces war records however
London Gazette for 13th June 1941 shows entry for 934055 Kenneth Charles Mackenzie being appointed as Pilot Officer on appointment from rank of LAC wef 15/05/1941 but without a corresponding officer number. Possibly published in error or was commissioned but relinquished.

    Try:-

The London Gazette, Publication date: 1 September 1942, Supplement: 35691 Page: 3863
Pit. Offs. (prob.) confmd. in appts. and to be Fig. Offs. (war subs.):
    18th May 1942. K. C. MACKENZIE (66600)
    .
The London Gazette, Publication date: 16 April 1943, Supplement: 35983,Page:1803
    "Fig. Off. K. C. MACKENZIE (66600) resigns his commn. 23rd Mar. 1943".

This might be the missing Officers Number missing Mackenzie? Y'can't just walk away from a War because you don't like it? Got to be a reason (or reasons) for these oddities?

Many thanks to all of you for your responses. I had seen the page from The Typhoon Project sited by John but as Dave points out the ranks do not match so may be a different individual. Unfortunately the ORB does not mention where he went after leaving 174 or provide much info regarding his identity. He was posted in in Feb. 44 from 186 Sqn. but I did not find anything useful in that squadron's ORB either.

Chris, I managed to miss the posting details from the April '45 ORB, so a big thank you for pointing that out. As you and Peter have indicated it would appear that the resigned his commission and reverted to NCO rank. A mystery without any clue lacking access to his service file, although one may speculate. By the way, the Air Force List for July 1941 confirms his officer service number as 66600 the actual date of commissioning being 18 May 41. The others commissioned on the same date also lack officer numbers so obviously a proofing error.

Thanks again for your valuable inputs.

    Regards,
    Tom

    Robert Charles HAYES R105083 RCAF
    Born 12/04/1922 Ontario Died 11/12/2007
There is a photo of him on ancestry and an obituary that states he was a member of the Typhoon Pilots Association and served on 125 Squadron (later 441 Squadron).
Also a RCAF crash card showing his service number when he was involved in a minor accident in a Harvard 11/12/1941 whilst a student at 14 SFTS Aylmer

The 18 May 42 Plt Off > Fg Off date fits with Comm on 18 May 41.

There will probably be 7 (or 14) days A/L between leaving one Sta/Sqn as a Fg Off and arriving at the new Sta/Sqn as a Flt Sgt?

One wonders what the reason(s) was(were)? This rank progression is rare – but not unique? One wonders just how many there were? And one wonders what the ‘normal’ time-scale was for WW2 aircrew to go LAC > Flt Sgt?

Now he seems to be a more promising candidate. Thanks, Chris.
