    Default Cologne 'A', 'B' and 'C'

    Hi,

3 Group attacked Cologne a number of times during the 1941, each time the target Cologne would be followed by a letter prefix, 'A' or 'B' or 'C'. These refer to certain individual targets, or areas. Can anyone tell me please what they were? Is there a document in NA which specifies the towns and cities into this type of category ?

    TIA

For 1941 only. Codes first mentioned in raid reports on 26 February 1941.
    Berlin A, B and C (B Alexander Platz)
Bremen A, B and C (A East of old town, B Goods station, C East of Shipyards at Atlas Works)
Cologne A, B, C and D (A Centre Main square, B East Kalk Station, C West Main Station, D Gereon Marshalling Yard)
    Duisberg B and C
    Dusseldorf A and B
    Emden A and B
    Frankfurt A and B
Genoa A and B (Industrial centres E and W side of town)
Hamburg A, B and C (A West Altona Station, B East Berliner Tor Station)
    Hamm B
    Hannover A and B
    Karslruhe A (Centre of town)
    Magdeburg A and B

    Munster A and B
    Nurnberg A and B
    Osnabruck A and B

From Cologne the first 1,000 bomber raid by Charles Messenger May 1942, read from a small map
    "X" 1,500 to 2,000 yards North of "A"
    "Y" 1,500 to 2,000 yards South of "A"

Hi Geoffrey: are these “Letter Codes” available for German Targets for the late 1944-1945 period? I would be interested in the description of those. The are often mentioned in the operational orders.

The Bomber Command Night Raid Sheets series starting AIR 14/2664, the summary sheet can at times give the aiming point code letter and a description, but as you can see from the list it mostly does not, or there is hand written note like for 2/3 June 1942, Dusseldorf A and B are railway. I suspect A is generally something in the middle of town.

The project was to replace the Richard Davis summaries of Bomber Command raids 1939 to end 1941 inclusive with group level details, which meant only to AIR 14/2673 were copied. All the day raids (14/3360 to 3368) copied but they usually have a specific target as per files like Air 10/3993 and 3994, neither of which were copied. The plan is to return someday and extend the project to the end of the war.
