    Default George William Leonard (79211)

I know that I've already mentioned this chap on the 'Sqdn / Ldr Carter thread, but I'm wondering if anyone knows about George Leonard's pre- World War II life. As I now believe he would have been at least 28 years old when commissioned in 1940, I do wonder if he had perhaps had previously been in some other form of military service? Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Thanks Peter - that explains his gunnery experience - he was 'gunner' deliver the letters on time! Seriously though, thank you, but may I ask how you came to this conclusion and do you know where he might have been working?

    Thanks again

    Andrew,
I'm afraid I made an error. I thought I'd found him in the London Gazette - but I made a mistake!!
    Regret

No problem Peter - at least I'm not the only one who does that! Thank you for trying.

    Cheers,

    Hi guys,

In answer to your question, he was an ironmongers assistant in Ebbw Vale steelworks in Wales. (Huge steelworks at the time). I have the census somewhere with his job referenced. He's my great grandad and my dad told me that's where he worked.

I was doing some research on him and came across your post, so hope this helps, no previous military experience before the war!

Hi Lewis, welcome to the forum & thanks for the information about your great-grandad. I tried to contact you through a private message but couldn't for some reason (maybe because you've only just joined?) However, if you're able to sent me a message with your email address, I'll send you the information I've gleaned about him so far & explain why I'm researching him too. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Cheers,

    Andrew
