    Hi Henk
Ashcroft, 33, registered at Manchester. I see from CWGC that he is buried at Salford, which is part of modern Manchester,so it seems possible that he died at or near his home. Billingham, his unit, is in Durham.
Carter,24, is registered at Durham East, which is the right area for Castle Eden and Hurricane V7400.
    Harpin,29, is registered in Oxford
    Regards
    Dick

Moving on into 1942 and I have this entry from the 55 OTU ORB:

January 1st 1942, “Flying accident to Hurricane V7400 at Castle Eden, Co. Durham, Pilot 655269 Sgt Carter R.G.W. killed. Cause of accident: Aircraft struck the ground vertically from 7000ft and caught fire.”

    Henk,

Reports in the local newspapers at the time just state that HARPIN 1004510 was 'killed in an accident in Oxford' which doesn't add much more to the story.

Thanks Martyn. He died on active service what means that it was a non-flying accident.

    Henk.
