AC2 William N. TURNBULL - 1645435 - age 35.
AC2 Walter LUKE - 1695427 DOAS
Here is his obituary from the Morpeth Herald and Reporter, December 4th 1942:
'The funeral of the late Aircraftman Walter Luke took place on Monday afternoon in Morpeth Churchyard with full R.A.F. honours. The coffin, draped in a Union Jack, was borne to its resting-place by members of the R.A.F., while a guard of honour and firing party were in charge of Flight-Lieut. Bull.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Luke, Maritime Place, the deceased gentleman had a short but brilliant career. After receiving his early education at the Morpeth Council School, he entered Morpeth Grammar School where his ability soon began to make itself manifest. On leaving school he entered the Morpeth Post Office in September 1925, and eight months later joined the regular staff. Three years later, when only 20 years of age, he sat the Higher Civil Service examination and was well placed amongst the successful candidates. Transferring to the Ministry of Labour, he was posted to Barnsley and after a short period there was selected as one of four candidates out of 68 to visit White Hall, London, for a six months’ special course. At the end of this period he was asked to join the permanent staff in London, but, preferring the north country, he turned down the appointment and returned to Barnsley. In September of this year he joined the R.A.F. After a short time he became ill and passed away on Wednesday, November 25th [at the Military Hospital, Middlesbrough].
The funeral service was conducted by an R.A.F. padre, who also said the committal prayers at the graveside.'
